Nick nodded. “Okay. So we’re both going in.”

Cara took a breath. “Yeah. We wait for the elders to start the spell, and then we’re going in.”

Chapter 59 - Nick

They stood to the side as Ana silently moved her arms and mouthed words of a spell. She was tiny, but Nick could feel the power emanating from her body. Her arms waved and her fingers moved in strange motions. Every so often, her lower body moved, too. Apparently, it was a very intricate and complicated spell casting movement.

To Nick, she looked like the only person dancing at a silent disco.

“Is it working?” Nick whispered.

Cara gestured for him to be quiet, and he took that as a yes.

They were technically inside the inner circle. There was a brief discussion about Nick’s presence and how it might negate the spell, and in the end, they decided that the best place to put him was inside. If he tried to come inside afterwards, he could disrupt the magic.

The vampire targets were inside the inner circle, so the magic actually flowed everywhere except the inside - they didn’t want the vampire energy to disrupt the flow of magic. That was where they put Nick.

He didn’t enjoy being grouped together with vampires, but apparently, it was their best shot. Cara explained all of this to him in a hushed voice that cut off as soon as Ana started doing her strange little dance.

All of a sudden, Nick felt a surge of energy. Black veins sprang to the surface of his skin in a flash, and he gasped as he felt the overwhelming power fill the air.

It took every part of his willpower to hold himself back. Every instinct wanted him to drain it, to open himself up to the magic, and he could only imagine how incredible it would feel. It would take a single moment to absorb the power of an entire coven. All he had to do was open himself up.

Cara touched his arm. “Your void is showing. Are you alright?”

“Fine,” Nick grunted.

She nodded, but she kept glancing at him as they watched the spell unfold.

Just a minute later, Ana stopped her dance and nodded to them.

“Let’s go,” Cara said, grabbing a small bag from the ledge beside her.

Nick hurried towards the vampire building, but he frowned at the bag. “What’s that?”

She strapped the narrow leather bag across her chest and flipped open the lid to show him.

“Wooden stakes?”

“I’ve been practising. I won’t be caught unprepared again.”

They reached the corner right before the side entrance. The coven had investigated the area using blueprints of the building and sensory magic, and this was their way in.

Nick eyed the bag again, and it comforted him. He didn’t like Cara being here, but he couldn’t stop her. Weapons would help to keep her safe. He was still wondering how she was able to walk into this building again, after everything that happened before. She should have been terrified.

They stopped for a moment, and suddenly, Nick knew he had to say something, in case he didn’t get another chance.

“Cara, I-”

There was a noise from above, and they both jumped when something big fell from somewhere above them. It hit the ground hard and exploded in a cloud of ash.

“Vampire,” Cara whispered. “The spell is working.”

“He passed out,” Nick said. “How did he fall?”

“No idea,” she said, and slipped out from the corner, running towards the door in a half-crouch. Nick joined her moments later, scanning the area around them for threats.
