“That’s unfortunate,” Nick said.

“He’ll tell the others,” she said, and she collected her stakes. She didn’t know how many vampires they were going to face, and she didn’t want to run out of weapons. “When did you learn to throw knives?”

“It’s new. Still no luck with the tracking?”

“No,” she said, casting a quick spell as Nick retrieved his weapon. “Samuel is probably on the top floor. I’m imagining some kind of penthouse.”

“So am I. Try and track him.”

“Samuel?”

“Yeah. Why not?”

Cara did it, and after a moment, she opened her eyes with a gasp. “I found him.”

“Great. Upstairs?”

“Yeah. All the way up, it feels like.”

“Let’s go.”

She followed him as he strode down the hall, checking doorways as they passed.

“Isn’t that surprising?” she asked. “I thought he’d be prepared against tracking spells.”

“Unless he wants us to find him,” Nick said. “He must have figured out what’s happening by now. Most of his people are unconscious on the ground. It could be a trap.”

“And we’re still going?”

Nick glanced at her, and dark lines flickered across his face. “Yeah. We’re still going.”

Chapter 61 - Cara

They found the escaped vampire in a room filled with mattresses. Ironically, most of the beds were empty, even though the majority of the vampires were asleep.

Wood creaked, and the vampire stepped out into view. “You made a mistake, coming here,” he said. His voice was raspy and strained, and Cara knew he hadn’t fed in a while.

She swallowed nervously and prepared a stake.

The vampire didn’t attack them, and Nick frowned. Nick turned to look over his shoulder, and he grabbed her, pulling her out of the way. Two more people rushed at them, swiping at her, and they barely missed.

As she stumbled, she sent the stake shooting. Her aim was off, but she still struck the first vampire’s shoulder, and he was knocked back.

Nick swung wildly, keeping the others away. The first vampire rushed them from the front, and Cara’s hands lit up with flame. He jumped back, hissing viciously, and Nick slipped the dagger from his belt.

Nick held the kanabo in one hand, the dagger in the other, and he rushed at them. Cara could have thrown fire, but Nick was too close, so she sent flames at the floor beside them. They jumped back, and Nick took full advantage of the distraction.

The dagger flashed and the kanabo swung, and ash filled the air. The third one was still standing, jumping at Nick, and Cara sent a stake into his chest.

“That was close,” Cara said, panting.

Nick picked up the stakes, but he didn’t look happy.

“What’s wrong?” she asked as she held the bag open for him.

“I just wish I was better equipped to fight them,” Nick said as they moved quickly through the next room. “You have magic, but I don’t have anything to even the scales against their strength and speed.”
