“There was this girl, and we went back to her house-”

“Come on, man, you’re making this way too easy for me,” Brett laughed.

“I think she was a witch.”

“That’s not very nice,” Brett said. “Just because she rejected you doesn’t mean she’s a witch.”

“She didn’t reject me,” Nick said. “I mean, she didn’t- Nevermind. It doesn’t matter. She’s a witch because she... She made a fireball.”

“It’s a great drink,” Brett nodded.

“I’m not joking.”

“You’re telling me that you saw this girl create a ball of fire from nothing.” Brett raised an eyebrow. “Like in a movie.”

“Yeah, but this was real life. And then the fire touched me and it was like the... the magic, or whatever it was, it went into me.”

“It went into you?”

“I don’t know how to explain it,” he said. “The fire went out, and I felt all this warmth flowing through me.”

Brett frowned and put his beer down. “Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

“You believe me?”

“Yes. I think you were drugged.”

Nick sighed and crossed the room, pacing past boxes and kicking dust across the floor.

“It’s okay, man,” Brett said. “As long as nothing happened, we can just-”

“I wasn’t drugged.”

“I think you were.”

“I wasn’t. This was real.”

Although, as he said it out loud, being druggeddidmake a lot of sense. If it wasn’t for the crystal-clear memory of her magic filling his body with that incredible euphoria, he might have believed it.

“I can show you,” Nick said. “My skin was covered in these black lines when it happened. Like veins, under my skin, but they were black.”

“That sounds bad. We need to get you to a doctor. Or a hospital. Listen, I’ll close up early, explain to the customers that it’s an emergency, and we’ll get you help. That stuff could still be in your system.”

“Just listen to me, Brett.”

“Actually, Molly should be starting her shift soon. What time is it? She should be on her way.”

“Brett.”

His brother was already pulling out his phone, presumably looking up the nearest medical centre, so he stepped closer and grabbed him by the shoulders.

“Look at me,” Nick said.

Brett looked up at him, and Nick could see the concern in his eyes.
