Five vampires stood in front of it, and they glared at Nick and Cara.

“Hi, guys,” Nick said. “I don’t suppose you’d just step aside and let us pass, would you?”

The vampires snarled and rushed at them, and Cara grabbed a stake.

Chapter 62 - Cara

When the vampires were nothing but ash, they went up the stairs, and Cara healed the bite on her arm and the deep scratches across her shoulder. Her shirt was ruined, and when she looked at Nick, he looked just as bad as her.

“I wish I could heal you,” she said.

“I’m fine,” Nick grunted.

She looked at the cuts and scratches, and his torn shirt. “You’re not, but we’ll bandage you up afterwards.”

He didn’t say anything.

The staircase was quiet. Suspiciously quiet, Cara thought, but she had to remind herself that her entire coven was casting a powerful spell over the building. Most of the vampires were unconscious. If anything, it was surprising that they had to fight as many as they did.

They reached the top floor and Cara closed her eyes and reached for her magic, trusting Nick to keep an eye out for danger. She kept a wooden stake in each hand, just in case.

Magic flowed in currents through the air, ambient and unbiased, but her power tugged at those currents and pulled her forward. She turned in a circle, trying to see past the huge amounts of vampire energy in the air.

“He’s close,” she said. “Very close.”

Nick nudged her. “Do you think it’s that huge, ornate golden door over there?”

She opened her eyes. The door was massive, right at the end of the corridor, and it took up most of the wall. “Oh, yeah. It could be.”

“Just a guess,” he said.

“That might be anyone’s door, really.”

“It’s impossible to tell,” he said.

She looked at him. “What about Brett and the girls?”

He hesitated. “I don’t know. They could be in there, too. Hostages or something.”

“I guess there’s only one way to find-”

Three pale blurs rushed towards them. Cara sent two stakes flying at the vampires and Nick swung his kanabo.

One of her stakes missed, but the vampire had to jump out of the way, and the other took a stake to the stomach, and he fell back.

Nick caught the third one in the ribs, and he crumpled, gasping for air. He started to heal and Nick struck again, turning him to ash.

The survivor eyed both of them and realised that he was out of his depth. He turned to run and Cara sent a stake through his leg. He dropped to one knee with a snarl.

Nick raised his kanabo.

“Wait,” Cara said.

The vampire spun around, claws out to catch Nick under the ribs, and Nick grabbed his arm and twisted. The vampire yelled. He brought up his other arm, and Cara sent a stake through it, pinning it to the wall. Her stomach twisted at the sight of it, but she forced herself not to react.

“What are you doing?” Nick asked. “End him.”
