“They’re the last line of defence,” she said. “They were waiting outside to protect the vampire lord from anyone who got this far.”

“So?”

“He looks old,” she said, stepping closer and examining his clothes, his hair, and the unusually pale shade of his skin. “Vampires don’t die, but they do age. It just looks different than it does in humans.”

The vampire watched her with narrowed eyes, and when she got close enough, he snarled.

“Powerful vampires loyal to Samuel,” she said. “If anyone knows where our friends are, it’s them. If he’s dead, he can’t help us save them.”

Nick was quiet for a moment. “Good thinking.”

“Where are the prisoners?” Cara demanded. “Julia, Quinn, Brett. Where are they?”

“Brett? You mean the daywalker?” He laughed. “He’s with the boss, obviously. Do you really think he’d let the daywalker go far from his side? That boy is destined for great things with a mentor like Samuel.”

“And the girls?” Cara demanded.

“I’m not telling you anything,” he hissed. “You don’t scare me, witch.”

Cara started to draw her magic to conjure a flame to threaten him, but Nick was already moving forward.

The void spread across his skin, over his arms and under his shirt, showing itself in the rips and tears that exposed his skin, and it reached up to his face. The lighting forks and jutting lines of black ink stretched over everything except his eyes, which stayed blue.

Nick lifted Henry’s dagger to the vampire’s throat, and the man was suddenly silent.

“Don’t,” he gasped. “I know what your people are capable of, void. I was here in 1962.” He was obviously terrified, but his eyes didn’t stay on the dagger. He was looking at the black veins covering Nick’s skin.

“Then you know what will happen if you don’t answer her questions.”

The vampire hesitated. “You’ll let me live?”

“That’s not going to happen,” Nick said.

“I’ll let the spell take me,” he blurted. “I’ll be unconscious, like the others. Please.”

“Fine,” Nick said. “But if I find out that you lied to us, I’ll come back for you.”

“I won’t! I swear. They’re in the basement.” His eyes moved to Cara. “They’re hidden by magic. One of the outcast witches helped us. But...” He hesitated, and Nick pressed the dagger against his throat. “Alright, alright, just calm down. Please.” He took a breath when Nick lowered the blade. “But the witch only hid the people.”

“What?” Nick asked.

“Of course,” Cara said. “There’s a way to bypass the spell.”

The vampire nodded eagerly. “See? I helped. I kept my end of the deal.”

Nick glanced at her, and she quickly explained. “The spell is specific to them, it doesn’t hide the location itself, or anything in it. I can track something else, something they have with them. Why didn’t I think of this before?”

Nick stepped away from the vampire. “Does it always work that way?”

“Well, no.”

“So you couldn’t have thought of it earlier.”

“I suppose not.”

“But now you have the information, so can you use it?”

Cara nodded. “Julia has a necklace she never takes off. Her grandmother gave it to her. She’ll be wearing it. She always has it with her.”
