She tried the spell again, and it worked. “I found them. I can feel them.”

Nick turned to the vampire. “Alright. You told the truth. Now let yourself go to sleep.”

“You won’t kill me as soon as I do?”

“No, I won’t.”

“Why should I believe you?”

Nick sighed, glancing at the golden door with obvious impatience. “You have my word. Now do it.”

The vampire hesitated. “The word of a void means little to me.”

“You don’t have another choice. Do it.”

The vampire looked reluctant, but he obviously didn’t have any other options. After a moment, he closed his eyes, and then his body sagged limply against the wall, held up by the stakes.

Nick pulled the stakes out and the vampire crumpled to the ground, and he handed them to Cara.

The vampire’s arms were already healing, even though he was unconscious, and Cara quickly reached down to touch his temple. She could feel the coven’s magic, and she relaxed. He was really unconscious.

“We need to split up,” she said.

“That’s never a good idea.”

“They’re downstairs, and Samuel is right inside that room with Brett. There’s a good chance that both of us won’t survive this. I need to make sure that Quinn and Julia get to safety. You need to do the same for your brother.”

Nick sighed. “And we can’t give him a chance to escape. We don’t have time to do both without putting the girls at risk or letting him find a way to sneak past the witches.”

She nodded. “It’s the only way.”

Nick pulled her close, and she almost dropped the stakes. His eyes blazed blue, and she forgot about everything except for him. He kissed her deeply, and she folded into his arms, almost dropping the wooden stakes.

He let her go, and she took a step back, quickly looking around the hallway.

“What was that for?” she whispered.

“For luck,” he said.

She stepped back, looking at him for a long moment, and then she turned and hurried towards her friends. She didn’t look back, and she tried to convince herself that it didn’t feel like he was saying goodbye.

Chapter 63 - Nick

Nick walked up to the door. For some reason, he had an urge to knock on the door and wait for a reply.

He tightened his grip on the club and shoved the door open.

“Ah, Nick, hello. You kept us waiting.”

Samuel stood alone in the middle of the huge, luxurious apartment. It was open-plan, and surprisingly modern. Black marble countertops, huge windows looking over the city skyline, beautiful couches, a flat screen TV and a stone fireplace. Outside, Nick could see Edinburgh Castle, and he had a fleeting thought about how much this apartment would cost.

Beside Samuel, Brett stood in a circle of runes that glowed and pulsed red and silver light. He looked shaken, but he wasn’t visibly hurt, and Nick closed the door behind him.

Around the sides of the room, half a dozen unconscious vampires were scattered, and it looked like someone had pushed them out of the way after they fell.

“Nice place,” Nick said.
