“Thank you. I must ask, where is our mutual friend? Dear Cara must be here somewhere.”

“She didn’t come,” Nick said. “It was too dangerous.”

Samuel smiled. “She found the girls.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Nick said, slowly approaching them.

Samuel didn’t react to Nick’s approach. “My boy, you cannot fool me. We both know your witch would never let you come here alone. And, of course, the witches outside are her coven, are they not?”

“I wouldn’t know,” Nick said. “Hey, Brett, how’s it going?”

“Pretty good,” Brett said. “It’s like staying in a hotel, except it’s free.”

Nick almost smiled, but he couldn’t manage it. “Brett, I need to tell you-”

“I know,” Brett said. “Dad. I know.”

Samuel sighed loudly. “I’m going to cut this off before it becomes depressing. Put down the weapon, Nick.”

Nick was almost within reach of Samuel, and the vampire held up a hand, stopping Nick from coming closer.

“Close enough, Nick.”

Nick hesitated, glancing at Brett. He was close enough to see the exhaustion and fear that lined his brother’s face, and he glanced down at the rune circle that Brett seemed to be trapped in.

When it was clear that Nick had stopped moving, Samuel smiled.

The vampire strolled to the windows and looked down. “You see, Nick, I have some experience with this particular coven. The elders and I were allies, once.”

“I’ve heard.”

“Although I have to say, the years have not been kind to them,” Samuel said, tilting his head as he looked down.

“Can you actually see that far?” Nick asked.

Samuel turned. “No, but I have access to the security cameras on several buildings nearby. Once my people started falling asleep where they stood, I had reason to investigate.”

Nick took a step towards Brett, and Samuel stopped smiling. “No, no, we can’t have that. Step away from the wards, Nick.”

He didn’t move. “What is it?”

“A vampire prison, of course. I admit, it seems unorthodox and slightly twisted to have such a spell in my own home, but it comes in very useful sometimes. Now, Nick, please step away. Do not make me ask again.”

Nick’s fingers tightened around the handle of the club. “Stop me, then.”

Samuel smiled and moved in a blur. Nick stumbled back, swinging wildly, but Samuel was already gone. He stepped behind Nick, grabbing him and throwing him across the room.

Nick hit the couch and flipped over it, hitting the floor with a groan. He was still holding the club.

He got to his feet, ignoring the dull ache in his shoulder, and saw Samuel smiling at him.

Nick knew he was outmatched. He couldn’t beat Samuel like this, but he had to try. He went around the couch, grabbing a big ornate lamp off the table as he passed. It looked fragile and very, very expensive.

“Be careful with that,” Samuel said. “It’s priceless.”

Nick lifted it into the air and opened his hand, letting it drop. It shattered against the stained oak floor, and Samuel frowned.

“That was extremely disrespectful, Nick.”
