He shrugged and looked around. There was a display cabinet with several jewels, and he stepped towards it with his club.

Samuel moved in a flash and grabbed Nick, lifting him and lunging across the room to slam him against the wall.

Pain exploded through his body, and Nick fought through the agony in his back, and he tried to laugh, although it came out with several coughs.

“What’s the problem, Sam? Did I make you angry?”

Samuel snarled. “Don’t play games with me, Nick. I’m hundreds of years old. You’re barely more than a child.”

“You look pretty old, to be fair, Sam.”

“Stop calling me that,” he growled.

“You don’t like it when I call you Sam? But we’re friends, Sam. I’m letting you call me Nick, so I think it’s only fair if you return the favour.”

Samuel growled, deep and loud and terrifying. “Be careful, Nick.”

Nick shoved him back and swung, trying to take him by surprise.

Samuel grabbed the top of the club with ease, and Nick couldn’t pull it away.

“I’ve lived for centuries, boy. I’ve killed more people than you’ve ever met. Did you really think you could beat me with this?”

He ripped the club out of Nick’s hands and threw it across the room, narrowly missing Brett’s head as he ducked out of the way.

“I see that dagger, too,” he said, nodding to the sheath on Nick’s belt. “If I’m not mistaken, that looks like a witch hunter weapon. How is dear Henry?”

Nick snarled and the void flashed black and he lunged with the dagger in his hand.

Samuel moved with blinding speed, slapping the dagger out of his hand. Nick howled and clutched his arm, and he saw the dagger hurl across the room, bouncing over the floor until it hit the far wall.

“Predictable,” the vampire said, shaking his head.

Nick looked around for another weapon.

“I didn’t want to kill you,” he said, approaching Nick.

Nick backed away, but he was quickly getting closer to the wall. He was running out of space.

“Then don’t kill me. Let me go.” He tried a smile. “This could be one of those stories we laugh about in a few months. Remember the time you tried to kill me? We’d be a hoot at parties.”

“You’ve given me no choice,” Samuel said, and he almost sounded sad.

One of the vampires nearby was unconscious, incapacitated by the spell circle surrounding the building, but there was a blade on his belt. It might have been a machete.

“We all have choices,” Nick said. “We could be allies.”

“We could have been,” Samuel nodded. “I wanted that. But you chose the witches.”

“To be completely honest, they don’t even like me,” Nick said, taking a subtle step to the side. “And they’re boring. Your vampires seem like more fun.”

“You managed to form an alliance with them. You were an amusing threat before, but with witch power behind you, I can’t possibly let you live. I have to admit, you surprised me. I never imagined that the elders would entertain the possibility of allying themselves with a void. They’ve always been stubborn.”

Nick lunged for the unconscious vampire and Samuel blurred and grabbed Nick by the throat.

“Our little game has to come to an end,” Samuel said. “I don’t like endings, Nick, but I must admit, I’m looking forward to this part. I haven’t fed on void blood in decades.”

Nick tried to speak, but he choked. Samuel’s grip was like iron around his throat, and he couldn’t get air into his lungs. His vision was already spinning, and Samuel smiled at him, opening his mouth wide to show Nick the rows of gleaming white teeth.
