“I wasn’t drugged. I feel fine. I remember everything. And I canshowyou. Not right now, but I can ask the girl to come back, and she can do her magic for you.”

“I can’t let anything happen to you,” Brett said. “You’re my brother. What would Dad say? We’re going to a doctor. I’ll call him later, after we know what we’re dealing with.”

Nick shook his head. “Brett, I don’t-”

A crash echoed from the front of the bar.

Brett cursed. “I need to check that. Stay here. When I’m back, we’re going to a doctor.”

“But I don’t need a doctor.”

“Then do it for me. If there’s nothing wrong, the doctors will confirm it. Alright? Do it for my sake. If they clear you, then we can talk about your magic girlfriend.”

Nick sighed. “Fine.”

Brett nodded and reached for the door handle, and another crash echoed from the bar.

“What is that?” Nick asked. “Is there a fight?”

“God, I hope not. That’s exactly what I don’t need today.”

“Should I come?”

“No, stay here.”

His voice faded as he walked down the hall towards the bar. Nick stayed where he was, not wanting to upset his brother any more than he already had, but he heard a third crash.

He ducked through the door and followed the noise.

Nick could hear Brett shouting something, angry and confused, and the crashes and yelling got louder and louder.

When Nick hurried into the main bar, he stopped in his tracks. It was trashed. Tables upturned, glass shattered across the floor, broken chairs lying in pieces, splinters and spilled beer. It looked like an earthquake had ravaged the building.

Half a dozen people were on the ground, motionless and covered in blood, bruises and deep wounds. After a moment, Nick realised the wounds all looked like bite marks.

He looked up at the four people standing in front of the bar. Two men, both standing over six feet tall and thick with muscle. A woman stood between them, and although she was smaller, her arms were strong and her hands were dripping with blood. Nick blinked, trying to process what he was seeing, and he finally noticed that it wasn’t just her. All of them were covered in blood.

The fourth person, a woman, stood at the front, and she was the only one without a drop of blood on her. She smiled at him, flashing perfect white teeth.

“It’s so nice to meet you,” she said. “If I’m not mistaken, one of you is the void we came to find.”

Chapter 5 - Nick

Brett grabbed his phone and held it up like a weapon. “I’ll call the police.”

“I wouldn’t recommend it,” she said. “You’ll both be dead long before they arrive.”

Brett hesitated, and Nick gestured at him to put down the phone.

“Who are you?Whatare you?” Brett demanded.

She smirked. “Vampires, obviously. You’re new at this, aren’t you?”

“What do you want?” Nick asked.

The woman’s eyes moved to him. Everything she did was calm, relaxed, but Nick felt a primal fear clutch his body. His body knew better than his mind. He was in the presence of a lethal predator.
