Faye moved further into the room, glancing around the area. Her eyes flicked from Nick to Cara and then stopped on the pile of ash on the ground.

“Interesting,” Faye said. “I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure what I’d be walking in on. He was powerful, but I doubt that he expected the witches to support you. I didn’t expect it, either, but you managed it. And you killed him.”

“Sorry to disappoint,” Nick said.

She smiled. “I’m not disappointed.”

“What?”

“No matter what happened today, I would have been happy.”

“I killed your boss.”

“Who do you think is next in line for command?”

Nick frowned. “You wanted this to happen.”

Her smile widened, showing her teeth. “Oh, yes.”

Nick’s void reared its head again. “This isn’t a game. You can’t play with people’s lives just for a promotion.”

“Of course, I can.”

“I’ll kill you.”

“You could, but you won’t.”

Nick let the void spread further across his skin. “Why not?”

“You need me.”

“You’re insane,” he said. “You tried to kill us.”

“I didn’t try to kill you,” she said. “Samuel did. And now he’s dead.”

Nick growled. “You attacked my family. You turned Brett into a vampire, and my dad-” Nick broke off, not trusting his voice to stay steady.

“Yes, I am sorry about Henry,” she said. “I was following Samuel’s orders. He made it very clear what he wanted, and he wasn’t the type to give second chances. You saw firsthand what happens to people who disappointed him.”

“I don’t care. You chose to work for him, and now you’re trying to make it sound like you didn’t have a choice.”

“Samuel was in charge, Nick. I didn’t have a choice.”

“You seriously expect me to believe that?”

“Yes. I told you I’d never lie to you, Nick.”

“Why should I listen to you?”

“If it was up to me, I wouldn’t have killed Henry. I would have killed all of you. It would have saved us a lot of problems.”

The void thrashed and he had to fight it to keep it contained.

“Not helpful,” Brett told her, and he put his hand on Nick’s arm. “I believe her, Nick.”

“See?” Faye said, smiling again. “Now, let’s put this all behind us.”

“This is far from over,” Nick growled. “And I don’t believe you.”
