Cara wanted to ask the other question, the big question, but she couldn’t. Every time she tried to bring it up, Nick changed the subject. He didn’t want to talk about Henry. It was too soon. She had to be patient, and when he was ready, she would help him deal with it.

“What if your dad punches me?”

“He won’t punch you.”

“He might.”

They stopped at the front door.

“Faye seems to be honouring the deal we made,” Nick said. “For now.”

“You’re stalling.”

He grumbled something, and she pulled him down to give him a kiss.

“You’ll be fine. They know you’re coming. My mother made food, and I’m sure that there’ll be beer.”

Nick looked at her. “Okay.”

“Okay? Really?” She laughed. “That’s all it took?”

“You should have started with that. Food and beer make everything better.”

“I’ll know for next time.”

“If there’s a next time, and your dad hasn’t killed me, we should invite Quinn and Julia. They can be a buffer between me and your family.”

“I’m easing them into the whole witch thing. They’ll get there.”

“They’re dealing with it surprisingly well,” Nick said. “Any news with them?”

“We’re already late,” Cara said. “No more stalling.”

Nick took a breath. “Okay, let’s do it.”

“Don’t worry,” she said. “My parents love me, and they know I love you, so they’ll be on their best behaviour.”

“If you say so,” he said, and she knocked on the door.
