“Do something else. Prove that this isn’t some magic trick. Like a fake magic trick, I mean,” he added, still staring at the impossible flame.

“I’m literally holding fire.”

“Maybe you have something hidden behind your arm.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“What else can you do?” he insisted.

She had already noticed the bruises on his arms. He probably had more, but she couldn’t see them, so she reached out to touch his skin. Before she touched him, she hesitated, and she decided healing magic might be too much for him to handle.

She pulled her hand back and conjured more flames. This time, she set fire to the blood-soaked tissue paper in the bowl on the table, and she held out her hand. As she poured magic into the flames, they rose higher, shooting unnaturally high into the air, and then she cut the flow of power and the flames flickered and died.

“This is crazy.”

“I know. Well, I mean, I’ve known about it my whole life, but I can imagine what you must be feeling right now.”

There was a noise behind her, and she turned to find Nick standing in the doorway.

“Can you imagine what I’m feeling?” he demanded.

Chapter 10 - Cara

He was across the room in a flash to check on Brett. His brother tried to push away his hands as he checked over his body, looking for injuries, and finally examining his head.

“Dude, get off,” Brett muttered. “I’m fine.”

Nick ignored him, but he glanced at Cara. “Why are you here? Haven’t you done enough?”

That stung, but she couldn’t really blame him. “I came to warn you that people found out about you.”

“A bit late for that, isn’t it?”

Brett frowned at him. “Calm down, Nick.”

Nick ignored him and tugged at Brett’s shirt to check for injuries.

“Are you okay, Nick?” Cara asked. “Who attacked you?”

Nick seemed satisfied that Brett wasn’t going to bleed out, and he finally let his brother shove him away. “Vampires. I thought you’d know that already, since you’re the only one who could have told anyone about me.”

“I didn’t tell anyone,” she said. “Well, I told my parents. I’m sorry, Nick. I thought I could trust them. You knew I was going to ask them-”

“You didn’t tell me they were going to spread the news around the entire city.”

“Nick, let her speak,” Brett said.

“Why should I?” he demanded. “You were almost killed.Killed, Brett. Because of me. Because people found out about me.”

“It’s not her fault. She helped me. She checked my head, made sure I wasn’t hurt, and cleaned me up. And she told me about magic. She showed me, actually.”

Nick was quiet for a moment. “So you believe it’s real?”

“I do,” Brett said.

Nick glanced at her. “You cleaned him up, but it still doesn’t look great. It must have been pretty bad before you started.”
