“It’s not your fault,” he said. “You were trying to help. God, I’m tired.”

“Being kidnapped has that effect,” she said, giving him a small smile.

After a moment, he returned the smile. “Does it happen to you often?”

“I can’t say I’ve had the pleasure, but the night’s still young.”

He grinned, but it faded quickly. “They found us at Brett’s job. What if people find us here?”

She hesitated. “That won’t be a problem.”

“Why not?”

“You guys have protective symbols carved into the ground around the house. Magical wards.”

He laughed. “No, we don’t.”

“You do,” she said.

His laugh faded. “But we can’t.”

“I saw it.”

“Did you do it?”

“No, I just got here. They look like they’ve been here for years.”

“That can’t be right.”

“I can show you if you don’t believe me.”

“No, I... How?”

“Do you live here alone?”

“Yeah. Well, me and Brett and my dad. He owns the place.”

“Then I think you should talk to him. He might know more than you think.”

Nick shook his head. “There’s no way.”

“Are you sure?”

Nick hesitated. “Yes. I think. Maybe.”

“Someone put them there. The important thing is that they keep out supernatural creatures, including vampires.”

“Is my dad a witch, too?”

“I doubt it,” Cara said. “And it’s a warlock, if it’s a man, by the way. Some people use witch regardless of gender, but in general, if it’s a man, it’s warlock.”

“You should write a book on this stuff,” Nick muttered.

“But he’s probably not. Even if he was careful around you, for whatever reason, his magic would have surfaced at some point, and your void would’ve been triggered. Unless he knew you were a void, of course, but the stories say it’s impossible until the void is triggered.”

“Dad would’ve told me if he knew something this important.”

She nodded. “Well, if you ask me, he must know something. It might not be anything about the void, but it can’t be a coincidence that your house is surrounded by protective magic.”
