“That’s ridiculous, don’t bother-”

The door opened and Brett looked at them. “I only heard the last ten seconds, but I have to cut you both off. You can just sleep here and leave in the morning. Dad won’t be back tonight, so we have an extra bed.”

Cara hesitated. “I don’t know-”

“Well, I do,” Brett said. “Vampires don’t like sunlight, right? So you’ll be safe to leave in the morning. Also, I’m hungry. So let’s all agree I’m right, and let’s get food.”

“You’re never right,” Nick said. “You’re wrong more than anyone else I know.”

“You’re being very ungrateful to someone who was just about to buy you food.”

Nick paused. “I guess you can be right sometimes.”

“I thought so.” Brett looked at her. “Food?”

“Yes,” she said with a smile. “Definitely.”

Chapter 11 - Nick

It had been two full days, and there was no sign of another vampire attack.

Cara was at the house she shared with Quinn and Julia, near the campus, and Nick was finally starting to relax after everything that happened with the vampires. There was no sign of anyone attacking the house, and he hadn’t seen a single sign that black veins were going to appear on his skin.

So far, so good.

“I feel like we should call Dad,” Brett said, announcing his presence.

Nick looked over at him. He stood in the doorway, yawning and stretching, and Nick took out a second cup to make coffee for both of them.

“You’re up early,” Nick said. Brett’s sleep schedule revolved around late shifts at the bar and later nights with his friends, so it was rare to see his face before noon.

“Don’t change the subject,” Brett said. “Thanks,” he added, taking the steaming cup that Nick offered him. “But seriously, we need to call Henry.”

Brett sat down, but Nick had too much nervous energy to join him, so he stayed where he was and leaned against the counter.

“I don’t know,” Nick said. “He’ll be home tonight, anyway. I just think it might be better to tell him in person. This is... a lot.”

“I know, but I don’t think waiting is a good idea. Who knows if the vampires were telling the truth? They might not be willing to wait.”

Nick sipped his coffee. “If they were going to come for us again, they would’ve done it by now. And we’re safe here, inside the magical barrier around the house.”

“Which is another reason we should be talking to him,” Brett said. “Someone had to do the magic for those things, right? What did you call them?”

“Wards,” Nick said.

“Someone had to put the wards there. Dad might know. He probably knows someone with magic. Who else could it have been?”

Nick sighed. They’d had the same argument ten times over the last couple of days, and they kept coming to a stalemate.

“I think-”

The phone on the table started buzzing.

Brett glanced at it. “Speak of the devil.”

“It’s Dad?”
