Nick stepped forward, but Brett was faster than him, and he answered the phone before Nick could stop him.

“Hey, Dad,” Brett said, ignoring Nick’s frustrated gesture. “I’m putting you on speaker.”

“Hey, Brett.” Henry’s voice came through the phone, and it sounded like he was driving. “Why do you have Nick’s phone?”

“Oh, Nick’s right here. His hands were full, so I answered it for him.”

Nick glared at him.

“Hey, Nick,” Henry said.

“Hey.”

“Listen, guys, I’m just calling to say that I need to stay out here for a bit longer. I won’t get into the details, but somebody messed up, and they need a few of us to hang around until the problem’s sorted.”

Brett raised his eyebrow at Nick, and Nick pretended not to understand.

“Anyway,” Henry continued. “I just wanted to check in, make sure everything’s okay at home. If you need me to come home early, I can figure something out.”

“No, it’s fine,” Nick said quickly. “You don’t need to come home yet. Take your time.”

Brett stared at him and whispered, “What are you doing, man?”

“Just leave it,” Nick whispered back. “Come on, Brett.”

“Why?” Brett demanded, still whispering. “You got kidnapped by actual vampires-”

“Hey, guys,” Henry’s voice cut them off and they both fell silent. “I think I lost you for a minute there. I heard something, but it was really quiet. It’s probably the phone signal. Can you hear me?”

Nick and Brett glared at each other across the table.

“Yeah, we can hear you,” Nick finally said.

“Oh, good. So everything’s okay?”

“Yep.”

“You don’t sound like yourself, Nick. Are you sure you’re alright?”

“Yeah, everything’s fine,” Nick said. “We can talk when you get home.”

“Are you sure? Brett?”

Nick looked at Brett and shook his head, and Brett rolled his eyes.

“Yeah,” Brett said. “Don’t worry about it.”

“Okay, if you’re sure. If you need me, just call.”

“Bye, Dad.”

The call ended.

“Thanks,” Nick said.

“For the record, you owe me,” Brett said. “We’re dealing with literal vampires and magic and god knows what else, and I think you’re being crazy. We should have told him.”

“I appreciate you not saying anything, though.”
