“Nick.”

He sighed. “You can be very stubborn sometimes.”

“I’ve heard that before.”

He gave her a slight smile. “I’m not surprised.”

She took his hand and squeezed it. “We’ll get him back, Nick. We just need to keep our heads on straight and play it smart.”

“What did you have in mind?”

“Nothing, yet, but I’ll come up with something.”

“Stubborn and determined,” Nick said. “A dangerous combination.”

“Thanks, I think.”

“You’re not going into a vampire den,” Jay said, staring at her.

“I am,” she said. “I’m only telling you because I need to ask a favour.”

His eyes narrowed. “You want me to cover for you while you’re gone.”

“I do. I know it’s a lot to ask-”

“It’s not a lot to ask. It’s too much. I’m not going to enable you and let you go off and offer yourself up to a bunch of bloodthirsty vampires. Why don’t you wait for the rest of the coven? The elders can come up with a plan.”

“We don’t have time,” Nick said. “Call them if you want, but I’m not waiting around while my brother’s been kidnapped. I know where they are. I’m going. Now.”

“I’m going, too,” Cara said.

“This is insane,” Jay said. “What are you going to do when you get there? They’ll kill you on the spot.”

“They won’t hurt me,” Nick said. “They want an alliance.”

“Are you sure? You don’t know how they’ll react.”

“They want me, so I’ll give them what they want.”

Cara frowned. “But you’re not going to ally yourself with them, right? They’re monsters. Killers.”

“I don’t have a choice,” Nick said. “I’ll do whatever it takes to get Brett back.”

“Wait, wait, wait,” Jay said. “You’re going to workwiththe vampires?”

“I don’t want to, but what else can I do?” Nick said.

Jay hesitated. “But... No, you can’t. The vampires will break the peace treaty if they have a void on their side. They’ll have too much power. They’ll start killing people, attacking witches, doing whatever they want.”

“So what do you suggest?” Nick demanded. “Should I leave my brother there?”

“No, but...”

“But what?”

“I don’t know,” Jay said. “I need to talk to the elders.”
