He was handsome, but his smile lit up his face, and she felt that familiar flutter in the pit of her stomach. Whatever gut feeling she had about him, it was wrong. The only thing she succeeded in doing was making a fool out of herself, and he probably thought she was insane.

“I’ll text the guys and tell them we’ll be there soon, in case they’re wondering,” Nick said, taking out his phone.

As soon as he looked away, Cara quickly whispered a few ancient words, and she felt the flare of magic in her chest. The locator spell brought the image of her coat to the front of her mind - it was draped over the back of a desk chair in the next room, and she silently cursed Quinn.

She walked towards the door, passing Nick, and he reached out and took her hand. “Hey, by the way, sorry if I came on too strong downstairs-”

Cara felt a rush of cold through her body, and the spark of magic vanished.

She jerked away from him.

Nick frowned, and he said something, but she couldn’t hear him. Her head was spinning.

“Cara? Talk to me. Did I do something wrong? Cara?”

His eyes were wide with concern, but the blue flickered to black, just for a moment, and she took another step back. She stared, but his eyes were blue again. Completely normal.

“Of course not.” She laughed, but it sounded fake, even to her own ears. “I, uh, I’m just tired, that’s all.”

“Are you sure? You don’t look okay. Do you want some water?”

“I’m fine,” she said.

She could feel her magic returning, like an inner flame that was slowly returning to its normal strength. Her heart was pounding, and her legs suddenly felt shaky. It was fear. She wasn’t sure if she had ever been truly afraid before. Not like this.

“I should grab my jacket,” she said. She walked to the door, and he stayed where he was, but he shifted position, as if he wasn’t sure if he should follow her or not.

He seemed so real.

Once she was in the doorway, and she could see the top of the stairs, she knew she could escape. She was fast. She could run.

She turned to face him properly.

“Cara?”

“I have to be sure,” she said.

“About what?”

She opened her hand and conjured her power. It flooded from her chest, through her arm, into her palm, and when she opened her fingers, fire ignited. Flames swirled into a ball of fire that grew in her hand and lit the room with red and orange light.

Nick jumped to his feet.

Cara thrust out her arm and threw flames at him. She made sure to hit him in the arm, just in case she was wrong. If she was wrong, she couldn’t risk hurting him. She would never use her power to hurt a human.

Nick stumbled backwards, but he was too slow. “What the-”

She felt the shift in power. The flames trembled and died, vanishing completely, and there was no trace of anything except the slightest flicker of shadow. She felt a sudden pull of power, and she cut off the spell, ending the flow of magic before he could take anything else from her.

His eyes were huge and shocked. Dark veins spread across his skin, shooting like streaks of black lightning across his neck and his arms. They disappeared within seconds, but it was more than enough time for Cara to see him for what he truly was.

Cara threw the bedroom door open, lunged into the hallway and ran for the stairs.

She had to escape. She never imagined that she would meet a void. Not in real life. Not here. Not now. Not him. A thousand thoughts raced through her head, but fear took over. Her body kept going, even though her mind was screaming. Survival instinct.

She was in danger, and she had to run.

His voice followed her into the hallway. This monster, this void, the man who was going to kill her for her magic.
