“I’ve got it,” Jay said, and Nick kept his distance, but he leaned to the side to get a better look at the map.

“It’s not far from the university,” Nick said.

“It won’t take us long to get there,” Jay said.

They both looked at him, and he shrugged. “What?”

“You’re coming?” Nick asked.

“I can’t let the vampires get their hands on a void,” he said. “And I can’t stop Cara, so I’m going to make sure nothing happens to her.”

After a moment, Nick nodded. “Good. We could use the numbers.”

Cara glanced through the window at the darkness. “Sunrise, then.”

“I hate waiting around, especially now that we know where Brett is,” Nick said.

“It’s the best plan,” Cara said. “If we’re lucky, most of the vampires will be asleep. Maybe all of them. And if we run into trouble, they’ll be at a disadvantage.”

Nick reluctantly agreed. “We wait for dawn.”

Chapter 17 - Cara

Cara lay on her bed, but she couldn’t sleep. It didn’t surprise her. With everything going on, she knew she wouldn’t get much rest, but she had to try. It would be stupid to face tomorrow without at least attempting to sleep.

Jay was downstairs on the couch. He lived right nearby, so it was pointless, really, but he insisted. He was acting as a chaperone for the poor, innocent, defenceless witch and the evil void.

He didn’t use those words, obviously, but his intent was clear.

Cara rolled over and looked at her bedroom door in the darkness. Nick was in the guest room, just down the hall. He was going to take the couch, originally, but they all agreed that it was too risky. If Cara’s parents arrived home unexpectedly, there was a strong chance that they would find Nick on the couch in the living room. However, if Nick slept upstairs in the guest bedroom, he could hear them come home and sneak out the window before anyone discovered him.

Cara lay there for another five minutes, thinking.

She slipped out of her bedroom before she could change her mind. It felt forbidden, moving quietly through her parents' house while they weren’t home, heading straight for the closed door of the guest bedroom. She kept silent, even though her parents weren’t here, and her heart was racing.

She almost jumped when she heard something - but it was just Jay, snoring loudly from the living room downstairs.

“How is he so loud?” she muttered.

His snoring followed her down the hall, but it faded before she reached the guest room.

She knocked on his door gently. “Nick?”

There were a few seconds of silence, and then the door opened. Nick was in the middle of pulling his t-shirt on, and she looked before she could stop herself. She caught a glimpse of his chest in the dim light, and she blushed and looked away.

“Hey,” he said, his voice low. “You alright?”

“I’m fine,” she said. “I was just... checking on you.”

He smiled. “I’m fine, too.” He stepped back, holding the door open for her, and she went inside.

She suddenly realised she was just wearing old football shorts and a baggy, tattered t-shirt that she never intended to be seen wearing, but it was too late to do anything about it now. He was still wearing his jeans, and of course, the t-shirt.

“I know there’s a lot of bad stuff happening,” Cara said. “But it will-”

“Don’t tell me it’ll be okay,” Nick said gently. “Let’s not talk about it.”
