“Okay. What do you want to talk about?”

In the dark, she barely saw his eyes drop to her lips. It was just for a fraction of a second, and she had to wonder if she imagined it. She could hardly see him.

Nick stepped closer, leaving the door open behind him, and she tried not to react. His big, solid shape moved towards her until she had to tilt her head back to keep her eyes on his face.

“We could talk about anything,” he said. His voice was quiet and deep, and it filled the space around her. “Or we could stop talking.”

He was so close to her, and she stopped resisting. She reached out and put her hand on his chest, and they both tensed. She should have been afraid to touch him. He was a void, but right now, she didn’t care. He could take it all.

Nick let out the breath he was holding, and she felt his heart beating through his skin. Hard planes shifted under her hand as he stepped closer and his hands went to her waist.

“I still have my magic,” she said.

“I know.”

“It hasn’t happened since the first time,” she said. “You’re controlling it.”

A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. “I’m trying.”

Her hand moved across his chest to his shoulder, and her fingertips trailed across his t-shirt, finally brushing against the bare skin under the edge of his sleeve. His hands tightened on her waist, and she looked up at him in the dim light.

“Even now?” she asked.

“Even now,” he said.

“I should go,” she said. “I showed up without warning, and you probably want some time alone to think about everything.”

“Right now, I don’t want to think about anything,” Nick said.

His eyes were deep, endless blue, and she leaned up on her toes before she could change her mind. Their lips touched, just for a moment, and she pulled back.

His eyes darkened, and he kissed her. It quickly grew from a soft brush into something harder and needy and desperate, and she threw her arms around his neck, pulling herself against him as his hands wound around her and locked her body against his.

She pulled back, and he looked at her like she was crazy, but she tugged at the hem of his t-shirt, pulling it up over the hard muscles of his stomach. He grinned and lifted his arms, and she pulled it over his head.

He kissed her again and lifted her easily. She wrapped her legs around his waist, and he carried her towards the bed. He lay her down gently, still right on top of her, and her fingers tangled in his hair to pull him closer as she kissed him, and his hands were on the mattress, strong arms keeping his weight off her.

Suddenly, Jay’s snoring filled the house.

They froze, and Cara leaned her head to the side, looking at the open doorway behind Nick.

“We should stop,” he said, but everything in his voice said the opposite.

“Probably,” she said, but she didn’t pull away.

Jay snored louder, and after a moment, she laughed, and Nick started laughing, too. They were almost too loud, but she couldn’t stop her breathless giggling as Jay’s snoring continued to fill the room.

“God, he’s annoying,” Nick laughed, rolling over to lie on his back beside her.

“He has his moments,” she grinned.

“Probably a good thing,” Nick said.

“Probably,” she said, although she didn’t believe it. “We should get some rest.”

“I guess we should.”

Cara sat up slowly, and she looked at Nick, still lying on the bed beside her. He sat up, too, and she looked down at his body, giving him a quick smile.
