A small sound caught her attention, and she turned quickly, sending light splashing across the room.

“You smell fantastic.”

She froze. The deep voice was smooth, warm and inviting. Velvet and silk, the kind of voice she wanted to wrap around her and take away every worry in her life. Disarming and enticing, even though she knew exactly what he was.

Vampire.

“A lot of people don’t know this, but some blood smells better than others.”

Quiet footsteps approached in the darkness, and she still couldn’t see him.

“It can depend on so many things - health, fitness, diet. I have a theory it could be genetic, too, but who knows?”

“Who are you?” she demanded, searching the darkness.

“They’re feeding us early,” he said, stepping out of a patch of ink-black shadows. “But I’ve never had a witch before. I wonder if you taste different than humans.”

“Keep wondering.”

“Put out the fire before you hurt yourself, dear.”

“Not likely,” she said, and she lifted her other hand, conjuring another flame.

The vampire’s handsome face twisted in a sudden snarl. “Enough, witch. I don’t know who you angered to be brought here, but you can’t escape. There are too many of us.”

Cara resisted the urge to look around the room. Was he trying to trick her? Even if he was telling the truth, she had to keep looking at him. Vampires were fast, and she’d only have seconds to defend herself if he attacked.

“Come now, child. This will be so much easier if you just let it happen. I’ll show your mind wonderful things while I drain you. Dreams beyond your wildest fantasies. You won’t feel a thing.”

“How do I get out?” she demanded.

Soft sounds crossed the room, just out of reach of her light. There were more of them.

Cara took a deep breath. The flames flickered, responding to her fear, but she poured more magic through her hands, too stubborn to let them die, and the flames grew higher.

She already felt tired - her power was fading fast. Her wounds must have been worse than she thought.

The vampire stepped closer, and she held her ground.

“You don’t get out,” he said. “I already told you, there’s no point fighting us. Give yourself to me. Believe me, you don’t want any of the new ones catching you first. They’ll tear you apart while you’re still screaming. I’ll make sure it doesn’t hurt. We’ll have a good time, you and me.”

Cara tried to relax and extend her senses. Vampires had the advantage in speed and strength, but they weren’t connected to the world like she was. Her mother talked about intuition, and she needed it now more than ever.

“They’re newly turned?” she asked, stalling. She just needed a direction. Somewhere to run. An exit, a door, anything.

Another thought occurred to her, and she tried to ignore it - fresh vampires were by far the most savage, especially when they finally fed for the first time. Her stomach clenched.

“Why are you here with them?” she asked.

“Someone has to mind them,” he said, smiling at her as he met her gaze. The smile lit up his face, making him even more handsome, and Cara quickly avoided eye contact.

“Stop that,” she said.

“Stop what, dear? I just want to see you. You have such pretty eyes.”

The soft, whispering movements finally stopped, and she could feel them behind her. She knew they weren’t here when she fell. She didn’t sense their presence earlier, but right now, it was almost overwhelming. Undead energy swirled around her, and she breathed it in, letting the fear sharpen her senses.

The older vampire came first. He heard her crash through the ceiling, and he stepped into the room, right in front of her. The others came from the same direction, but they circled around the room to come from behind.
