Jay didn’t reply, and Nick rolled his eyes.

Silence followed them, and Nick started moving faster. He didn’t want to walk into a trap, but his gut was telling him that there was nobody here, and they needed to find Cara sooner rather than later.

The vampires fled, for whatever reason, and he needed to make sure she was safe. Being fast was more important than being careful. Besides, his own safety was a lot lower on his list of priorities. Cara and Brett were here somewhere. He didn’t have time to go slow.

“It’s easier with objects,” Jay said.

Nick glanced back. “What?”

“Tracking. Locator spells. People are harder than objects. It’s easier with simpler things, like clothes or car keys. Especially when you’re familiar with it, or you have an emotional connection. People are more complicated, especially people you don’t know.”

It was interesting, but Nick didn’t say that out loud. Jay would probably find it suspicious.

“I’ve seen Cara do it,” Nick said. “You don’t need to act like I’m digging for secrets.”

Jay hesitated. “It’s not the same thing.”

“It’s not?”

“Cara, she’s... She’s good at them.”

“At what?”

“Tracking spells,” Jay said. “It’s linked to intuition. Sensing things. Tracking isn’t one of my talents. The objects she used in the house were part of a more complicated spell, covering a bigger area at a greater distance. If she was looking for something nearby, she probably wouldn’t need any tools.”

“But you do.”

Jay shrugged. “Yeah.”

“Like training wheels for a bike.”

Jay glared, and Nick pretended not to notice.

There was a noise from up ahead, and a door opened.

“I almost didn’t believe it when I heard that the witches were working with a void.”

Nick froze, and Jay raised his hands and conjured invisible energy. The air rippled around his palms. Nick lifted his poker and tried not to look stupid. The door opened further, and a man in a suit stepped out. It wasn’t Samuel.

The vampire looked at both of them for a moment, more curious than afraid, and then he smiled at Jay. “My name is Barden.”

“Weird name,” Jay muttered.

“Where are your prisoners kept?” Nick demanded.

“Right now,” Jay added, “or we’ll kill you before you can take another step.”

Barden’s smile broadened into a wide grin. “I so enjoy the arrogance of youth.”

Jay bristled. “I’m serious. We killed like five of your guys already. Don’t underestimate us.”

“Oh, I don’t,” Barden said.

“Then tell us what we want to know.”

“I could never betray Samuel.”

“Is your leader worth your life? He’s not here. He’s not willing to fight us. He’s hiding, and he left you behind.”
