“What the hell did you do to me?”

Chapter 2 - Nick

Nick watched her sprint from the bedroom, and he didn’t know what to do. He walked to the doorway, and he wasn’t sure if he should be running, too. He didn’t know what was happening.

He stepped into the hall, but she was already downstairs. He heard her unlocking the front door, and he stood at the top of the stairs.

“Where are you going?” he asked.

Cara had the door open, looking like she was ready to bolt, but she looked back. She seemed surprised, like she was expecting him to be closer to her.

“Why are you running?”

She stared at him from the doorway. “What?”

He struggled to put it into words. “Shouldn’t I be the one running? You threw fire at me. Where did you even get the fire?”

“I don’t... I don’t understand.”

“I’m not chasing you,” he said. “You look like you’re being chased.”

She paused, and then, slowly, she stepped back inside.

“If you keep the door open, you’ll let all the heat out,” he said.

“You don’t know what’s happening,” Cara said.

“Of course not.”

“How can you not know?”

“This conversation is going nowhere,” Nick said. “Can you just explain what happened?”

She took a step towards him, but he stayed where he was. She was already spooked. He didn’t want to send her running by walking downstairs.

Cara watched him. “If you really don’t know what happened, then why are you so calm? Someone just tried to set you on fire.”

“Not someone,” he said. “You. You tried to set me on fire.”

“So why aren’t you running away from me?” she asked.

“It’s a good question. I don’t know.”

As soon as he said it, he realised it was a lie. He wasn’t afraid of her, so he didn’t need to run. Somehow, he knew he wasn’t in any danger from her. Right after the fire vanished, he saw those black lines flash across his skin, and he felt a rush of something incredible. He didn’t know what it was, but it felt amazing.

“Tell me how you made fire appear in your hand.”

After a moment, she seemed to relax slightly. She didn’t come closer, but she didn’t run.

“Magic,” she said.

“I don’t understand.”

“How did you feel when you absorbed the flames?”

It was incredible. It was phenomenal. It was the best thing I’ve ever felt in my entire life.
