“I’d argue that the vampires had something to do with it.”

Jay glared. “Are you serious? This is your fault.”

Nick kept walking. Obviously, Jay was right, but he refused to give him the satisfaction of saying it out loud. Cara was here because of him.

Jay stopped walking. “Wait.”

Nick sighed. “Look, man, I know you’re angry, but-”

“That’s not what I’m talking about,” Jay said.

Nick looked at him, and he stopped himself from saying anything. Jay was standing there with his eyes closed, and his hand was in front of him, fingers extended through the empty air.

It must have been a witch thing. Jay turned in a circle, eyes still closed. It had to be magic. Or Jay was crazy. With everything going on recently, Nick wouldn’t even be surprised.

“Do you feel that?” Jay whispered.

“No,” Nick said. He glanced up and down the corridor, but there was nobody else here. Even the gloomy corners were too small to hide any vampires. “What is it?”

“I think it’s magic,” Jay said.

“Is it Cara?”

“I don’t know, but it could be.”

“I doubt there are any other witches in the building,” Nick said. “Which way is it?”

Jay was facing a wall when he stopped turning. “This way. And down. But she’s close.”

Nick frowned. They’d already come down a set of stairs. How far did she fall?

“Let’s go,” Jay said, and he stepped forward, almost walking right into the wall. “Oh, uh, nevermind.”

Nick looked back the way they came. “We didn’t pass any more stairs leading down, so let’s keep going. They must be somewhere. We’ll find our way down and you can do your bloodhound impression again.”

Nick walked ahead, ignoring the dark look Jay shot at his back.

“She’s close,” Jay said, moving faster.

“Are you sure it’s her?” Nick asked, but Jay ignored him, rushing ahead. “Slow down, we don’t know what’s-”

“Cara?” Jay called out. “Cara!”

Nick cursed under his breath and ran to catch up.

They came into a large, cold hallway with a dirty carpet covered in dark stains. Metal doors lined the walls, and Nick gasped.

“Cara.”

She was lying on the floor, covered in blood. Her face, her hair, her clothes. Dried blood was everywhere. Nick froze for a second, thinking the worst, and then he saw the slightest movement of her chest.

She was breathing.

Jay ran to her, and Nick followed, watching as he dropped to his knees. Jay muttered words under his breath, moving his hands in movements that Nick couldn’t understand.

Nick felt the magic rising, and he stepped away, making sure to keep his distance from Jay. The warlock lifted his hands over Cara’s motionless body, and Nick stared, waiting.
