Brett turned back to her. His eyes moved between her and Nick, and she glanced over. The void lines still covered his face.

Cara scrambled for an idea that would convince Brett to come back inside, but before she thought of anything, Jay muttered something.

“Daywalker,” he gasped. He was still leaning against the far wall, and all the blood had left his face, but he wasn’t looking at Nick. Not anymore. His eyes were locked on Brett. “He’s a daywalker.”

Nick turned sharply. “What’s a daywalker? Can we fix it?”

“He’s a monster,” Jay said.

“He’s not a monster,” Nick snapped. His voice was too loud, too sudden, and Brett jerked back, and then he turned and ran.

Nick cursed and ran after him, and Cara glanced at Jay as she followed. Jay looked shaken, but he wasn’t injured.

Outside, Cara squinted against the bright sky overhead. They were in an alleyway, but the sun was high in the sky, so there were only a few shadows. She glanced around, searching for Brett in the dark, but he was nowhere to be seen.

“He’s gone,” Nick said. He stood at the end of the alley, on the street. His back was to her, and tension tightened his shoulders.

She moved towards him. “If he’s a vampire-”

Nick’s fists clenched, and she paused.

“He’ll be faster now,” she said gently. “Too fast to catch.”

“Maybe,” Nick said. “How do we fix it?”

Cara joined him at the end of the alley. The void lines were still crossing his skin, and she knew what he did to Jay. She should have been afraid of him.

“Nick...”

“I need to find him.”

“You need a plan. You can’t just run after him and expect to catch him.”

“I have to try.”

Behind them, Jay climbed through the broken wall. He was staring at the back of Nick’s head, and he kept flexing his fingers. She saw his mouth moving, but she couldn’t hear whatever he was whispering to himself.

He met her gaze, and she recognised the look in his eyes. For the first time in his life, he had his magic stolen. She knew the feeling. She didn’t think she would ever forget it.

“They were both voids,” Jay said. “This whole time, they were both voids. We risked our lives for a-”

“I wouldn’t finish that sentence if I were you,” Nick said sharply.

Jay glared. “Is that a threat?”

Nick turned, and finally, the black lines were starting to recede. His face was clear, but they were still coiled around his arms.

“Don’t talk about my brother,” Nick said.

“Or what? You’ll use the void on me again?” Jay’s hands bunched into fists. “Come on, then.”

Nick sighed. “I’m sorry.”

Jay blinked. “What?”

“I’m sorry I took your magic. I just... It was just instinct. You were going to hurt Brett. I had to stop you.”

Jay frowned. “Are you serious?”
