“It was strange,” Nick said.

“Yes, it was,” Cara said.

He took a few slow steps down the stairs, and when she didn’t run, he kept going. By the time he got to the bottom, he felt almost normal again.

“Your hand was on fire,” Nick said.

“It was.”

“Are you okay?”

She frowned. “Yes.”

“You don’t look surprised. You’ve done this before.”

“I’ve conjured fire before. Like I said, magic.”

“So what was different today?”

“You.”

“I didn’t do anything.”

“You absorbed magic. You’re a void.”

“I’m avoiding what?”

“No, you’re a void. That’s what they call you. I’m a witch, you’re a void.”

“You’re a witch?”

“I did magic, Nick. Of course I’m a witch.”

“Hey, no need for the attitude. This is all brand new to me. What happens now?”

“I don’t know. I’ve never met a void before.”

“I’m not a void, Cara. I’m just me. I’m Nick.”

“If you were just a normal person, that fire would have hurt you.”

He frowned. “So that was a pretty risky move on your part. What if you were wrong?”

“In my defence, I thought my life was in danger.”

“Really? From me?”

“Voids have a bad reputation, Nick. For good reason.”

“Okay, okay, wait. Start from the beginning.”

“This might take a while,” she said. “And I’m still not entirely convinced that you’re not trying to trick me somehow.”

He sighed. “We have time, right? Let’s go sit down somewhere, and you can stay by the door. That way, you can escape if I’m secretly trying to avoid you.”

“That’s not how you say it,” she said. “Void, not avoid. And it’s not a verb. I don’t think so, anyway. You’re a void, but you can’t void people.”

“So what do you call it?”
