Henry laughed. “If they were real, we could ask them. How’s college? I feel like we haven’t talked in a while. Classes going okay?”
Nick hesitated. “It’s only been a few days.”
Wow. Just a few days,he realised. It was insane that so much could change in such a short time.
“Still, tell me what’s going on,” Henry said. “How are you? Your friends, classes, exams, girls, boys, whatever. Spare no detail. We both know I’ll bore you with everything I did while I was on my work trip, so you should take this chance to bore me.”
He shot Nick a grin, and Nick felt the knot in his stomach relax. That knot had been there ever since he stole Cara’s magic. He got so used to it that it was starting to feel normal.
For the first time, it unwound, and Nick took a deep breath. “Can we talk?”
“We’re talking right now.”
“No, I mean... Can you stop cooking?”
Henry looked at him. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah,” Nick lied. “I’m fine.”
Henry frowned. “Give me a minute. I’ll turn this down to a simmer.”
Nick fidgeted while Henry did whatever he was doing. His heart was pounding, and he barely noticed Henry moving around the kitchen.
“Music or silence?” Henry asked.
Nick blinked, shaking himself out of his spiralling thoughts. “Uh, yeah, leave it on.”
Henry nodded and turned the music down to low, comforting background noise. “Go ahead. Actually, no, I have to ask. Pregnant?”
“What?”
Henry spoke slowly, clearly pronouncing every word. “Did you get someone pregnant?”
“No!”
“Okay. So what’s up?”
“I...” Nick couldn’t think of where to start. “Do you know about witches?” he blurted.
Henry took a split second too long to respond. “Of course,” he said. “Fairytales and pointy hats and magic wands.”
Nick watched him. “Iknow about witches.”
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
“What do you know?”
Now or never.“I met one.”
Henry was quiet for a moment. “I see.”
“There’s more,” Nick said. “But for now, I just... I have to know if you know.”
Henry’s expression didn’t change. “Know what? The witch you met? No, I haven’t met them.”
“You’re avoiding the question,” Nick said.
