Page 80 of Into the Void

“Would I? The job title does sound a bit... dark. Witch hunter. You hunt witches. I could see people making assumptions about what you’re willing to do.”

Henry nodded. “Can’t argue with that. Anyway, the vast majority of my time was boring, and we have more important things to deal with.”

Nick knew his father was holding out, but he just nodded. “Brett.”

“Yes, and we need to figure out what’s happening with the witches, the vampires, and anyone else who might be involved in the war that’s brewing.”

“You really think it’s a war?” Nick asked.

“I don’t want to scare you, but the confirmed arrival of a void is big news. Wars have been started for less.”

Nick already knew it, but it was so much more terrifying to hear it confirmed by Henry.

This was his fault.

“I’ve been out of the game for a while,” Henry said. He looked at Nick for a moment, and then he nodded to himself. “Come with me.”

“Where are you going?”

“To wipe the dust off my old hunter gear.”

Nick hurried to follow him. “Can I see it? Will you show me how to fight them?”

“I can show you the basics, but this kind of thing takes time.”

Henry led the way into his bedroom.

“Do you have a secret room behind the wall?” Nick asked.

Henry raised an eyebrow. “You’ve watched too many movies.”

“So where is it?”

Henry opened his wardrobe and reached inside, doing something Nick couldn’t see, and then the back panel slid to the side.

“That’s basically a secret room,” Nick muttered.

“Hidden compartment,” Henry said. “Give me a hand with this.”

He pulled out a heavy wooden trunk, dragging it across the floor, and Nick took the other side. He pulled it, grunting at the weight, and together, they managed to haul it onto the foot of the bed.

“I keep most of it in a storage unit,” Henry added. “But this will be enough for us until I can collect the rest.” He pulled his keys from his pocket and handed one of them to Nick. It looked completely normal - just an average key that was the right size for the shiny padlock on the trunk. “Do you want to do the honours?”

Nick reached down to unlock it, but he stopped. “I have to ask something.”

“Go ahead.”

“I thought voids were rare. How is it possible that Brett and I both have it? You said Mom’s family weren’t witches, but you didn’t say they were voids, either. It seems strange that nobody else turned out to have the void power, and then suddenly, both of us have it.”

Henry didn’t reply for a moment. “Brett isn’t a void anymore. He’s something different than a normal vampire, but he’s not a void. It doesn’t work like that.”

“You keep avoiding my questions. We both have it. If Brett hadn't turned, he’d be like me. Does it run in the family?”

“It’s not that simple.”

“Is it about Mom? You said she wasn’t a witch. Was she a void?”

“No. I’ve never met another void, Nick. Your mother wasn’t... Listen, I think we should wait for Brett for this conversation. You should find out together.”
