He raised an eyebrow. “Careful now, all these compliments will make me think you like me.”

“This doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Not necessarily. I mean, at the very least, it means you’re immune to magic.”

“Like what? Spells and curses and mind-reading?”

“We can’t read minds,” she smiled. “But yes, basically, no magic can touch you. And the effects of magic should be useless against you.”

“Should be?”

“I don’t have much experience with voids.”

“Alright. So you can’t cast spells on me.”

“That’s right. Although, they’re not really spells. Not in the way you’re thinking.”

“I thought you couldn’t read my mind.”

Her smile grew. “I can’t. All I’m saying is that I don’t have a magic wand, and I almost never chant in a mysterious ancient language.”

He grinned. “Almost never?”

“Almost.”

“So what kind of magic do you use?”

“It depends,” she said.

He waited, and when she hesitated again.

“You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to.”

“It’s okay, it’s just... I’ve never done this before. Talking to someone outside my family and my coven. It’s strange. I haven’t even told Quinn and Julia.”

“You seem really close, I would’ve thought they knew.”

“It’s not really something I can tell people.”

He thought about it for a moment. “This is crazy.”

“Sorry.”

“Don’t apologise. It’s not your fault I turned out to be a void.”

She nodded.

“You didn’t know, and you didn’t make this happen to me,” he said. A thought occurred to him, and he frowned. “What happened after your magic disappeared? It’s temporary, right?”

“Oh, yeah, I think so. I can already feel my magic again, and I’ve never heard of any lasting effects from a void’s touch. All the stories say the real danger is from weapons and physical attacks.”

“So witches really think voids are dangerous.”

“Well, yeah,” she said. “The void legends are always dark, and they always end badly for whatever witch gets caught in their path.”

“So we’re the bad guys.”

“That’s what I’ve been told. Sorry.”

“At least now the whole thing where you ran away from me makes sense.”
