“That’s different. That was just information. This is... I’m learning how to fight vampires. To help Nick.”

“I thought you were doing this because of what happened in the vampire den.”

“Well, yeah, I guess. You’re annoyingly perceptive, you know that?”

He laughed. “I’m not, really. I just know you. Listen, we don’t have to be on opposite sides. I’m sure there’s a way for everyone to work together. Samuel and his vampires are the real enemy.”

“I know that, but the coven doesn’t. The elders don’t. You’re loyal to them, Jay. You made it pretty clear when you ran to tell the coven about Brett being turned into a vampire.”

“I stand by my choices,” he said. “The daywalker is a threat, and the coven needed to know. I don’t want anything bad to happen to Nick’s brother, but as far as we know, he’s beyond help.”

“What if you’re wrong?”

Jay shrugged. “Then I’ll have to live with that. Do you want help or not?”

Cara glanced at the crude wooden targets. “Okay. Thanks. Sorry, I didn’t mean to reject your help, I just felt like-”

“If you start talking about your feelings, I will actually leave.”

Cara smiled. “Okay.”

She held the stake in her hand and looked at the bench. Drew on her magic, braced herself, and then she sent the stake shooting through the air. It slammed directly into the target.

“It worked! I can’t believe it!”

“Okay, okay, calm down,” Jay said with a smile. “You did it one time. Also, it’s a wooden bench that's not moving, and it’s practically close enough to touch. As targets go, I wouldn’t rank it very high on the list of achievements.”

“Hey, this is progress for me,” she said.

“Well, then, congratulations, you stabbed a defenceless bench. Well done.”

She laughed, and he stood up to peer into the shed.

“Let’s try some moving targets,” he said, and he stepped back, moving his hands as the rest of the broken pieces of furniture floated out of the shed.

“Now you’re just showing off,” she said.

He grinned at her. “Just a bit.”

Chapter 35 - Nick

Nick went into Brett’s room, opening the door quietly in case his brother was sleeping. Brett was lying on his bed wearing a pair of sweatpants and looking at his phone, but he noticed the door opening and glanced up.

“You should really knock,” Brett said. “I’m alone in here. You don’t know what you could be walking in on.”

Nick grimaced. “Don’t put that image in my head.”

Brett laughed and shifted over to the side of the bed, making space for Nick. “What’s up, man? Are you here to talk about all the weird and terrible things we’ve been through recently?”

Nick sat facing him and crossed his legs. “Should we be making jokes right now?”

“Of course. Horrible experiences are the perfect time to make jokes. It’s called a coping mechanism.”

“I doubt it’s healthy.”

Brett rolled his eyes. “Relax, Nick. You were way more fun before you decided to take responsibility for everything that happens. Lighten up. We’re both still breathing, right? Get over yourself.”
