“Harsh,” Nick said. “It looks like this vampire thing is turning you into an ass.”

Brett grinned. “I’ve always been an ass.”

“That’s true.”

“See? We finally agree on something. It just took another tragedy to force it out of us.”

Nick smiled and shifted position, lying on his back beside Brett and staring at the ceiling. “Hey, there’s a crack in your ceiling.”

“Yeah, it keeps me up at night.”

Nick didn’t laugh, he just stared at the ceiling for a minute, deciding what to say.

“Sorry for getting you turned into a vampire.”

“Not your fault. It was some woman with a killer smile.”

“Was that a vampire pun?”

Brett laughed. “Not on purpose. Anyway, I’ve decided being a vampire can’t be that bad. The main problem is not being able to go outside in the sun, but that doesn’t apply to me. Once I can control the weird mood swings and the sudden impulses to drink blood, I’ll be better than ever.”

“You’re really looking on the bright side of this.”

“Hey, I’m stronger, faster, and even better looking than I was before. Who thought that was possible?”

Nick laughed. “We need to check you for head injuries. You’re delusional.”

Brett propped himself up on one elbow. “Another great point. No head injuries in my future. I can’t get hurt. Well, I can, but I’ll just heal. It’s nothing but benefits.”

“I wouldn’t say no to a healing ability,” Nick said.

“Maybe you can be a vampire, too,” Brett said. “We can both do it.”

“I don’t think it works like that.”

“Why not? We’ll just find a vampire to turn you.”

“Henry mentioned something,” Nick said, shrugging as he examined the crack in Brett’s ceiling. “He thinks it’s important that you were turned before your void activated.”

Brett frowned. “What does that mean?”

“Honestly? I have no idea. He had a lot of theories and stories, but most of it went over my head.”

“Too bad Cara isn’t here,” Brett said. “I get the impression she understands how all this works.”

“Yeah,” Nick said. “She’s pretty smart.”

Brett smirked. “Smarter than you?”

“Probably.”

“Not surprising. Everyone’s smarter than you.”

Nick laughed. “Becoming a vampire hasn’t changed how annoying you are.”

“You’re only annoyed because I’m right.”

There was a knock at the door.
