“Came here looking for my sister’s ex. He skipped out, taking her kid with him. She wants her daughter back.”

Danny got to his feet and stated angrily, “Breanna doesn’t even know her mother. Rylan left us two years ago. Did she tell you why she wants Breanna back? Huh? Did she tell you why?”

Taker glared at him. “Don’t matter why son, she belongs with her mother.”

“Doesn’t it?” Danny snarled back. “Maybe you should ask her why before you grab her away from me. Maybe you should know what she’s gonna do with her daughter when she gets her back.”

“What the hell do you mean by that?” Boss asked in disbelief. “She’s Rylan’s kid.”

“Then why is Rylan gonna sell her to Papa Doc?” Danny exclaimed. “She owes that bastard a lot of money and Papa Doc said he’d knock some off her bill if he got her daughter.”

Boss looked over at Taker and Flame then shook his head. “She wouldn’t do something that foul.”

“You don’t think so?” Danny grabbed his phone. “Hear it in her own words, don’t take what I’m saying as fact.” He scrolled through his calls and found the one he wanted and hit play on the speakerphone.

They all heard Rylan’s words screaming over the phone, “You lousy bastard. Where the hell are you? I need that kid. Papa Doc only gave me a week to get her to him. I made a deal with him and he won’t be happy until he gets Breanna. This is my life you prick. You weren’t there for me when I needed you and now I’m in big trouble! Give me what I want, give me the brat and then we’re both free.”

Boss glared at Danny and asked, “What did she mean you weren’t there for her when she needed you?”

Danny snorted, “She came to me a couple of weeks ago and wanted me to take out a loan for 50K for her to pay off Papa Doc. There was no way I could get that kind of money. I couldn’t afford to pay off that loan and she sure as hell wasn’t going to. So yeah, I imagine I didn’t help-her when she needed it, but it wasn’t my drug habit that sent her over the edge. It was hers.”

Boss looked over at Taker and then back at Danny. “She owes Doc 50k?”

Danny shrugged. “I have no clue what all she owes him. Like I said, she left Breanna and me a couple of years ago. But even before that, she was never home much. We saw her maybe three times a year and even then, she only stayed around long enough to grab some of her clothes then she was gone again.”

“Why didn’t you tell us about that?” Flame asked.

“What were you gonna do about it?” Danny snorted. “Hunt her down and make her come home? Nah, you guys were too busy to even come around and see Breanna. And yes, we would see you park across the street and watch the house for an hour or less every few months, but you never came over. Would you even know Bre today, if you saw her?”

Her brothers just stood there and glared at him.

Danny stood a little taller and said, “Breanna is my kid, not hers. I was there for her when she needed me, I changed her diapers, I gave her food. I provided for her the best I could, which was a hell of a lot more than her mother ever did for her. I would come home after working all day and Rylan wouldn’t be there. Breanna would be crying so hard, she couldn’t settle down. She left her alone in that apartment with nothing to eat some days and she wouldn’t even change her diaper. Finally, I got tired of it and I moved to another apartment. Do you know how long it was before Rylan called me to find out where we were? Seven fucking months before she even cared enough to look for us.”

Boss looked at both his brothers and shook his head. “That’s not what she told us.”

“Of course, it isn’t.” Danny scoffed. “Did you guys know she’s with Crank of the Devil’s Minions? And she has been for a couple of years now.”

Taker looked stunned. “Crank? Are you sure?”

“What the hell is she with him for?” Boss growled. “He ain’t worth the powder to blow himself to hell.”

Danny shook his head. “He got her access to Papa Doc and his drugs.”

“I’ll kill that bastard.” Taker growled.

Danny shook his head then he sat down and rubbed his face with his hands. “Rylan and I were done a long time ago. I knew it but she was having my baby and I wanted the baby. She stayed with me and sober at least until Breanna was born. But she sure didn’t love her daughter. She went looking for some new stuff after she got healed from having Breanna. She started stepping out on us that soon. She would be out all night and then come home looking a mess and smelling even worse. Sometimes, she’d be crashing and I didn’t have anything she wanted but she needed a place to sleep.” He shook his head. “I tried to keep her interested in Bre, but she just stopped coming home after a while. Then it would be weeks before we saw her again, then it was months. Finally, she just stopped coming home.”

“What happened after that?” Sam asked.

“After a few of her dealers started coming round, I had to find another apartment. They were told by Rylan that I had their money, but I never did. I couldn’t give them what I didn’t have. I had to move three times before she finally left me alone.” Shaking his head he admitted, “Then two weeks ago, she found me again, and she started looking at Breanna like maybe she could make a deal with me. When she asked if she could take her, I said hell no. That’s when she got real ugly. That’s when she told me Papa Doc wanted Bre and that I had no choice but to give her over. I said the hell I didn’t. I would rather leave town and never come back than turn my sweet girl over to a man like Papa Doc. She told me not to be stupid. With the baby gone, we could both be free.”

The brothers looked disgusted as they all shook their heads.

Danny took a look at the three men who’d come after him. “I love that little girl and I will protect her with everything I’ve got. Against you, against her own mother and against a man like Papa Doc.”

“You don’t have to protect her against us, you fucking idiot.” Boss growled. “We aren’t gonna hurt that little girl.”

“And just how the fucking hell did he know that, you damn fools?” Sam growled back. “You haven’t been around her much, if at all.”
