Sam smiled and then headed for the door. But as soon as he stepped through the door, he heard her phone ping with a text. Looking back, he could see that Melora looked truly riveted in her phone as everything around her seemed to be forgotten.

Suddenly, his world came crashing down again.

Slamming the door shut, he stomped over to his truck and got inside then he again, slammed that door shut. He snapped on the key and then before the engine turned on. he heard that sweet melodious laughter only Melora had. Then the engine came on and it drowned out the sound of her laughter. What’s so damn funny? His world was going to shit and the woman was fucking laughing? Sam growled as he backed up his truck. Gravel flew as he turned it around and pushed his accelerator all the way down to the floor.

He sped out of the driveway and down the road. He got to the cycle shop in no time. When he shut the front door hard and made his way inside, no one standing there dared to even say hello.

All morning, the guys silently watched him and wondered what the hell was going on with him.

When Sam was working on tightening a bolt, his hand slipped and he sliced the back of his hand open. “Sonofabitch!” he yelled out as blood dripped onto the floor. He just sat there and let it drip as he kept shaking his head.

Finally, Iceman walked over and squatted down to look into his eyes. “Bones, are you all right?”

Sam nodded, then shook his head. “Maybe not. I guess I’ve been rather scatterbrained today and it finally caught up with me. Damn...”

“Is there something going on that the rest of us need to know about?” Iceman asked him quietly.

Sam shook his head. “Just an off day and me being careless I guess. Don’t worry, I’ll clean up the blood.”

“Not worried about the blood, Bones. I’m worried about you.” Iceman shook his head. “You want me to call Melora to pick you up?”

Sam squinted at him. “Nah, I can clean up and get home on my own,” he grumbled. He stood up and went to the bathroom to take care of his hand. Leaving the door open, he ran his hand under the water as the blood dripped red in the sink. When the color changed to pink, Sam shook his hand off as he got a paper towel and dried it. The slice didn’t look too bad and the blood was already drying up. Grabbing the first aid kit, he fished a bandage out and slapped it over the cut.

Cleaning up the mess and rinsing down the sink, he then tore off a line of paper towels and went back to where he’d been sitting. He swiped up the drips of blood that had been splashed onto the floor. With a heavy sigh, he picked up his tools and walked over to the tool racks to put them away.

Getting his jacket, he headed toward the roll-up door. He went to his truck, got behind the wheel, and took off for home. The cut wasn’t nothing, but he realized he needed some time alone to get his head wrapped around this situation.

He got home and the house was empty, Melora and the kids were gone. Sam went to the fridge for a beer and went out to the patio. He sat there for a long time, thinking about what he had witnessed in the last few days. Maybe it could all be explained, but how could he ask her about it, without her flipping out?

Nothing was making sense in his mind right now, and he suddenly wasn’t sure about his future anymore. He loved the fact that Melora was his woman and that she’d given him two kids...kids he was allowed to raise as he missed out on raising his older kids. He’d made so many mistakes in his life before, turned down the wrong path, fucked himself over more than once, and pretty much paid for most of it.

Now he had a family and a home too. Was he risking all he had for something that only existed in his mind or was his sweet Melora really playing him? This whole fucking mess was driving him crazy...And when he felt like that, he always fucked things up.

Chapter Two

Bones heard the front door open as Melora’s footsteps sounded across the living room floor and she went down the hall. He figured she was putting Shaw down in her crib.

Then a few minutes later, he heard her footsteps going to the kitchen and then coming out to where he sat. She came over to him and handed him another beer. Taking a seat in a deck chair, she then opened her own beer. Taking a sip, she stared out into the backyard before she took a deep breath and finally asked, “Sam, what’s going on with you?”

Bones looked out into the backyard too as he shrugged. Then he turned to look at her. “What’s going on with you honey?” he asked softly. “You thinking about leavin’ me?”

Melora looked shocked. “What? Why would you even ask me that?”

Bones looked back out into the yard. “Seems to me, you got other things on your mind lately.”

Melora reached out to grasp his chin with her fingers as she turned his head to face her. “No, Sam, I am not thinking about leaving you. I love you and we’ve got two kids that need you and me together.”

Bones closed his eyes briefly and then he opened them again. “You belong to me and me alone, woman. I never share my woman and I’ll be damned if I share my wife with anyone.”

Melora reared back and hurt showed in her eyes. Then she steeled her backbone and growled, “And I won’t share you either.” She poked him in the chest and growled, “Am I making that clear enough for even you to understand? I don’t share my man either.”

Bones shook his head. “Woman, I ain’t the one thinking about cheatin.”

With a huge gasp, Melora reacted instinctively and slapped his face. “Is that what this is all about? Do you think I’m cheating on you? How dare you, Sam? Just how fucking dare you?” She got to her feet and stalked back into the house, slamming the door behind her. She slammed it so hard, it woke Shaw up and the baby began to cry.

Sam slowly shook his head and soon, he heard Melora walking around the house again while trying to hush Shaw. “Fuck.” He just closed his eyes and sat there for a moment with his head hung.

He heard Melora walking to their bedroom and when the door closed, he waited for a moment then he heard her walk into the kids’ room. He just didn’t know what to do to calm her down. He really messed up this time.
