“And who’s fault was that?” Sam snarled.

“I hear ya Bones, but sweet Jesus, haven’t you ever made a mistake before?” Taker growled. “We got busy with our own lives ya know?”

“Yeah, I’ve made my share of mistakes. I even made a huge one just recently,” Sam replied. “But not about my kids. I took care of my kids always. I might not have been with their moms but I took care of my kids. I get it that you got busy with your own lives but Danny needed help and the only one he dared to reach out to, lived a half country away from him. That’s just wrong in so many ways. But he made it here in one piece and we won’t let him struggle alone anymore.” He glared at the four brothers and said, “I get that Breanna isn’t your kid and you don’t have to help her, but she’s still your family and you guys have done nothing to help her, she didn’t even know you and she sure as hell doesn’t know her own mother. And that gentlemen is wrong any fucking way you slice it.”

“We get that we fucked up, Bones.” Boss looked angry. “But it’s in the past now, we don’t intend to leave them out in the cold anymore. But Danny never said anything either, so we aren’t fully to blame here. He never asked for our help.”

“He shouldn’t have to ask, that’s the whole point,” Sam exploded in anger. “You boys are Breanna’s uncles. You should have been there for every birthday and Christmas at least, but you never showed up. How was he gonna know if you would help him or not? Hell, you didn’t even know your sister walked out of his house two years ago or that she was with Crank all this time”

“Bones, back off some,” Gator warned his old friend. “Mistakes are just that, mistakes. Danny is here now, and we’ll treat him like family.”

“Damn right, we will” Sam grumbled.

“We will be back to check on them,” Taker stated.

“And we’ll let you know what happens to Rylan,” Deke told them. “If she stays here in New York. Although, she will probably face more charges back home.”

Taker snorted. “With the system we have in Chicago, I would doubt that. She might be sorry she pushed this so far away from home. She might have gotten a better chance in the Chicago courts than she’ll get here. Especially if they are carrying any drugs on them.”

“And you know they were,” Boss growled. “Rylan was high as a kite when she got off Crank’s bike.”

Flame just shook his head. “I hope she enjoyed her last high cuz she won’t get any more of that behind bars.”

Deke nodded at the brothers.“We’ll let you boys go back to Chicago then.”

Boss shook his head. “I need to talk to Danny again before I leave.”

“I think we all do.” Taker shrugged. “This is something we needed to do a long time ago. Bones is right, Breanna is family and we need to be there while she’s growing up. We’ll be there for her now.”

They all followed Sam back home.

When Melora opened the door she glanced from one man to the other and finally, she looked at Sam. “What happened?”

Sam reached for her and hugged her close for a moment.“Don’t worry baby, its over. Danny and Breanna are safe now. We’ll take care of them. He’ll find a good home here.”

“Oh, thank God,” Melora whispered. “Thank you, Sam. I was wrong you know. I should have told you about Danny a long time ago. I should have trusted you with my past, all of my past.”

Sam shook his head. “No baby, like you said, this wasn’t just your secret to tell. You did what you did to protect Danny and his little girl. I should have trusted you to do the right thing. I guess there is no fool like an old fool, huh?”

Melora looked amused as her lips turned up. “Yeah, but don’t worry, you’re my old fool and always will be. I love you Bones and I always will.”

“I love you too my Silky girl,” Sam vowed. “Now let’s get in the house. These boys want to talk to Danny.”

Chapter Fifteen

The four brothers, Danny, Sam and Melora all sat down to talk.

Danny told Rylan’s brothers what happened four years ago when Rylan changed almost overnight. He went on in horrid detail with what had been happening since then. He didn’t hold any punches back as he told them everything. He looked pained at certain parts and angry when he spoke of Breanna’s neglect. He hired babysitters, so he could work and they barely made it every month financially, but that he did not care about that. At least, he took good care of her and that was better than she got from her mother.

Danny looked over at Melora, “She was the only one I could think of to help and I didn’t know if she would remember me or not. We hadn’t seen each other since we were fourteen.”

“I could never forget you Danny.” Melora had tears in her eyes. “You saved my life back then and that is something I would never forget.”

“I know I asked you not to tell anyone and I’m sorry if it...” Danny shook his head.

Sam let out a sigh. “No son, she kept your secret because it wasn’t her secret to tell. If I had been in my right mind, I would have seen that. But I was jealous and out of my head over it. But she did the right thing. I should have had more faith in her.” He took Melora’s hand in his and raised it to kiss her palm.

“So Danny, what are you gonna do now?” Boss asked him. “You coming back home?”
