She rolled over to face Valen, thankful there was no pain beyond a dull ache at the back of her head. She didn’t want anything ruining this moment.

As if sensing she’d tossed caution to the wind, Valen stroked his fingers over her face. In the darkness it was impossible to see his expression, but there was a hint of reverence in his touch as he traced each feature. The sweep of her brow. The narrow length of her nose. The curve of her lips.

“Peri,” he murmured again.

“No.” She pressed a kiss against his mouth, oddly terrified he was going to end her delicious fantasy. “No talking,” she commanded. “Just touching.”

He jerked as if startled by her fierce urgency, but with a low growl, he returned her kiss with a scorching hunger. Peri shivered, accepting the sharp press of his fangs. The tiny pain amped her pleasure to another level.

It was rumored that demons could become addicted to the bite of a vampire. She’d laughed at the idea any sane creature could enjoy having a couple of massive fangs chomping on their neck, but now…

As if reading her mind, Valen gently tucked her hair behind her ear before skimming his fingers along the arch of her throat. Was he imagining the taste of her blood? The thought sent tingles of excitement through her. If she didn’t die quickly, she might give herself the opportunity to fantasize about the pleasure of his bite, but first she had other needs she yearned to have sated.

Lowering her hands, she used the tips of her fingers to trace the rigid six-pack that tensed beneath her touch. He growled in approval, wrapping his arms around her as he devoured her mouth.

Electric anticipation zinged through her, setting off bursts of fireworks. Peri hissed as desire twisted her stomach into a knot. She’d been in lust before. She’d enjoyed sex. But she’d never had honest-to-god fireworks. Slinging her leg over his hip, sheallowed her fingers to continue their journey down his body to circle the width of his erection.

Valen muttered something against her lips. The words were in an ancient language that sounded harsh and thick with need. He nuzzled the pulse pounding at the base of her throat. The touch of his lips was cold against her skin, but the heat it produced sent cascades of bliss through her. Of course, it didn’t hurt that his hand had moved to cup her breast, his slender fingers teasing her nipple until it tingled with pleasure.

Peri arched against his hard body, her fingers stroking down his cock. Valen made a choked sound, his fangs pressing against her fragile skin.

“I hunger for you,” he growled.

“Yes,” she whispered in approval, savoring the image of his fangs plunged deep in her neck as his thick erection plunged between her legs. Peri trembled, nearly coming from the mere thought.

“Peri.” Valen’s tone was oddly insistent as he said her name.

“No,” she groused, squeezing her eyes shut as she nibbled kisses over his chest.

This was her death wish. She didn’t want it interrupted. Valen, however, refused to allow her to cling to her fantasy.

“Peri, open your eyes,” he commanded.

His voice was edged with warning, cutting through the desire that clouded her mind. At the same time, his power shifted from a sensual promise to a pounding urgency.

“Peri, we’re out of time.” His hands grasped her shoulders, giving her a sharp shake. “Wake up.”

It was a rotten end to her brush with paradise, but then again, her certainty that she was on the edge of death was starting to fade as the layer of numbing darkness thinned. Distantly she was aware of the wood planks pressing into her back, and the humidheat that clung to her skin, and a muffled sound of cars rattling over cobblestones.

With a heroic effort, she wrenched open her eyes to discover Valen crouching over her, his eyes glowing with a silver fire.

Maybe she had died, she inanely told herself.

The vampire was certainly beautiful and lethal enough to be an angel of death.

Only one way to find out.

“Am I dead?”

Chapter 22

Valen arched his brows as he gazed down at Peri’s pale face. If he hadn’t been in a dire situation, he would have taken pleasure in discussing exactly what was happening in her dreams. The rich scent of her desire that spiced the air assured him that it was something he wanted to know more about. Most importantly, was he involved? And how soon could they make her dreams a reality?

But the situation was dire. And becoming more dire with every passing second.

“We are both alive,” he assured her. He glanced toward the morning sunlight creeping across the wooden floor. Behind him the magic created an impenetrable barrier that continued to press them toward the front of the building. The very definition of a rock and a hard place. “For the moment,” he added in harsh tones.

“For the moment?” The lingering daze evaporated from Peri’s eyes as she abruptly sat up to take in the sunshine that was only inches away. “Is the limo still waiting for us?”
