“I guess so.”
“I’m the guy that gets sent in when Dominants might react badly to their submissive leaving at the end of a cycle. I’m least likely to get punched. And I put people at ease. It isn’t sexy, but it’s useful,” he says. Robert winks. “And most people can’t tell.”
Craig laughs. But he’s stopped paying attention, more focused on what Robert has just revealed about Sam. “And that was a concern?” he asks, unable to stop himself. “That Sam might react badly?”
“Yeah, Sam should have had you to medical by now. He knows that.”
“Will he be in trouble?”
“No. He’ll just get sent on a mission so he can get his head back on straight again.”
Craig nods. “And has that… um. Has that happened before? To him, I mean.”
“I’m sorry, Craig. I’m not allowed to give you private information unless he’s authorized it.”
“Oh.”
The silence is awkward.
“Just so you know, if you wanted to put a request in for Sam to be the Dominant you see for your next cycle, you can.”
“Yeah, I want to do that.”
Robert gives him a warm smile. “You could also investigate the possibility of him becoming your Dominant of record since you don’t have anyone else. He’s a great guy—a friend—and he’d have your best interests at heart. He’s one of the good ones.”
“What does a Dominant of record do?”
“It’s sort of like power of attorney but for designation. He might be consulted if you need help or if you’re hurt. If you were unable to function, he’d be put in charge of decision-making for you.”
“Unable to function?” Craig asks, the idea disturbing. And it raises his suspicions.
“It doesn’t happen often. Usually after trauma. And everyone is aware that a submissive could be taken advantage of if the Dominant was unscrupulous, so it does get reviewed the moment a submissive asks for it.” Robert holds up his hands in a gesture of surrender. “I’m not suggesting it, I was just trying to inform you of options and how the world works now,” he says, contemplative. “I’d be pretty hesitant to let my sisters or brothers sign anything like that without all the information. Maybe this wasn’t the time to mention it. Sorry.”
The Dominant apologized to him? This really is a new world.
“It’s fine. And you’re not like the Dominants we had.”
Robert huffs in amusement. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”
There are a few more tests, as well as a physical exam, to make sure he didn’t get injured during his cycle. He’s offered a blurring shot and therapy and has to do an exit interview before he can be shown his quarters.
It’s yet another Dominant who comes in to do the interview, but this one is awful, and Craig dislikes him on sight. “Hi Craig, I’m Hank. Nice to meet you.”
“Likewise,” Craig lies.
“So, finished your cycle, huh? Looks like he was gentle with you. You don’t look that fragile to me,” he says and smiles as if they’re having a nice conversation.
“Can I go?”
“I’m sure you’re tired after the last few days. I’ll get you out of here as soon as I can. But, with your scores, we’re wondering if you’d like to go into the submissive pool?”
“What does that mean?” Craig asks.
Hank smiles. It isn’t sincere. There’s something about this man that makes Craig’s skin crawl. He wants to drop his gaze and leave.
“It means that whenever we need help with a Dominant, we give you a call. You can help. Be of service. Serve your country in the way most befitting your… gifts,” he says, gaze roaming Craig’s body unpleasantly.
“I don’t want to be available to just anyone.”
