Robert sighs and nods sympathetically. “Okay, it’s like that. Well, if you find your connection to Sam is intense, and you want to keep it that way because you think it might be reciprocal, then try not to go to medical until after you hear back from us on whether or not he accepts you as his submissive of record.”

“Is that what you’d tell your submissive?” Craig asks.

“Yes. It’s what I would want my submissive to know if the situation was reversed. Forming a connection with a Dominant doesn’t happen as often as one would think, Craig. If you want to try to have something with Sam, then you should go for it.”

“Just don’t go to medical.”

“Not if you can help it.”

“Would they make me?”

Robert winces and rubs his hand over his face as he thinks of what he wants to say. “Think of it like high pressure sales. Buying a time share or a car or something. It isn’t illegal, one can say no, but there’s pressure and psychology used to make a person say yes. The military won’t like it, and they’ll do what they can to prevent it from happening, but they are legally limited in what they can do to keep two people apart. Don’t go to medical, don’t accept drugs or therapy that’s meant to help you handle your cycle, and you’ll be fine.”

“Thank you,” Craig says, and he means it. Robert has given him valuable information, and Craig suspects Robert could get in trouble for mentioning anything that might dissuade Craig from terminating his attachment to Sam.

Two days later, there’s a knock on Craig’s door. He’s just come back from his reintegration class, and his head hurts from all the information he’s been given. Still, his first thought is that maybe it’s Sam.

It isn’t.

It’s Robert. “Hey, Craig. How are you settling in?”

“Fine, thanks.”

“Good. I was hoping you had a few moments to talk?”

Craig waves him inside, offers him a drink, and they sit on the couch.

“So, I wanted to come and tell you the news myself. I spoke to Sam, and we discussed your willingness to be his submissive on an ongoing basis, and while he isn’t averse to that arrangement, there are a few things you need to be aware of before you can consent.”

“He said yes?” Craig asks, and he’s almost sick with the need to hear it confirmed, stomach clenched up tight.

Robert holds up a hand. “It is a yes.But. The ‘yes’ is conditional because you don’t yet have all the facts, andyoumight change your mind once you have them,” he says firmly.

Craig very much doubts that the “facts” will change his mind. “Okay. What are the facts?”

“Well, everyone is different, right? Gene manipulation is not an exact science, and there have been some colossal fuckups as well as unintended consequences since this started. I’m a very high Dominant but register as a friend. Hank is a low Dominant but very high on the sadism scale, and he registers as an asshole—”

Craig laughs, and the wink Robert gives him indicates this was the goal, to break the tension. He tries to take a deep breath and relax, which makes Robert nod in approval.

“I’d be stressed, too. This is a lot. You want it to work, and so does he, but this is important, Craig. And he’s the first Dominant you’ve met in literally decades. I know you want him, but just hear me out, okay?”

“I thought you were his friend.”

“I am. But someone needs to look out for you, too. And I know for a fact that would be his priority. Any Dominant worth a damn is concerned for their submissive and wants to know that people are looking out for him. Sam won’t have a problem with me telling you to take a bit of time to think through what I’m going to tell you.”

“Okay. Thank you. So, as you were saying, Hank is a sadistic asshole.”

“Right. He is. But it also means everyone thinks he’s got a higher level of dominance than he does.”

Craig snorts. “He’s just all asshole.”

“Exactly. My point is that not all Dominants are created equal, not all needs are the same, and Dominants respond differently to various partners. Sam is fairly middle of the road; he’s a Dominant, but he’s not particularly at the high end, and that’s part of why he’s able to maintain such good control during his cycle and why he’s able to tend to a submissive instead of just being feral. The problem is that he doesn’t really come down too far when he’s out of cycle. His needs are pretty high and remain steady, and, in an ideal situation, his submissive would be willing to be submissive all the time.”

“Good.”

Robert chuckles. “That was the part I expected you to be okay with. Looking at your file, you two seem to have a lot of overlap psychologically and hormonally, so I’m not worried about that. Sam has been known to knot outside of rut, and of course, he can sheath against it—”
