Isaiah was only inches away from her now, could feel the tickle of her breath on the sensitive skin of his neck. The intensity of her gaze crested, her eyes searching his before they dropped to study his lips.

“Kiss me again.”

She didn’t have to ask him twice. In one fell swoop, he’d captured her waist and taken possession of her lips, want and need colliding in a cataclysmic explosion of desire. Rukia’s arms clutched at his back, his shoulders, but her mouth met his in a flurry of passion.

Teeth scraping along his lower lip, the Elemental teased him, pulling back before coming at him with even more fervor. He savored every moment of the intimacy, cherished every caress, all the while knowing he was walking a fine line.

Blood pumping in his ears, Isaiah shivered under the force of his attraction for her, the undying need that rose within him a force to be reckoned with.

No, this wasn’t simple lust. This was something far deeper.

But in the heat of the moment, the thought slipped away. The goddess before him dragged her nails down the side of his face and melted away. Eyes hooded with a yearning he couldn’t explain, he felt bereft with her sudden departure, and a spark ofsomethingcompelled him to follow.

Unable to keep himself from her, he lunged forward. Clasping the back of her neck, he encircled her once more in the shield of his body. His hand went to her waist, his fingers digging into the soft flesh of her hip as he drew her toward his center. A sound of need escaped her lips.

“You’re an addiction, Raeth,” came her sultry voice in his ear. “Stop tempting me.”

He paid her no mind while he moved her hair away from the sensitive flesh of her neck, his lips trailing lightly over her olive skin in seductive intimacy.

“Tempting you?” Isaiah couldn’t resist the very masculine smirk that whispered over his features. “Do I have such power over you?”

Rukia raised her chin and pushed her palms into his chest. “Takes two to tango, sparky.”

A tick started in his jaw, but he held no indignation. “There’s the name again. Who gave you permission to call me by anything other than Isaiah?”

Her haughty laugh was answer enough, eyes mischievously locked with his. Shaking his head as he fought to tamp down the urges in his heated blood, he took a step back to look at her knee. Much to his surprise, the flesh looked completely unblemished.

“Your element heals like the earth does?”

She nodded, but her expression turned forlorn, distant. “Gideon believed that we could never be fatally injured while in our element. He is a good man.”

Isaiah’s face had fallen as Rukia’s mood turned somber. “I’m sorry about Gideon, Rukia. I know he meant—means a great deal to you.”

Rukia bit her lips, blinking as tears threatened to fall. Pulling her close once more, Isaiah cradled her head against his chest, his cheek resting lightly on the top of her head. He held her as silent sobs shuddered through her shivering frame. It was a quiet, intimate moment amid the desert brush and the soothing babble of the stream.

Isaiah had never been one for the softer side of physical affection, but with Rukia, it felt natural. Comforting and essential at the same time.

In the hush of the moment, a telepathic knock brushed against his psychic senses. Instantly alert, Isaiah responded.

Nina.

Have you abducted Rukia?came the other sovereign’s mental voice.Tyee has expressed concern at her prolonged absence.

Isaiah resisted the urge to roll his eyes. She needed to be away from Paracel.

And will she be returning in a body bag? I don’t trust you with her.

Noted. He didn’t care. She is safe and well. I’ll return her when she wants to return. If you need further proof of her wellbeing, you can teleport here and verify it for yourself.

Isaiah got the distinct impression that Nina was hissing at him before her presence retreated from his mind. Rukia, however, had picked up on the conversation taking place on the psychic plane. She tentatively pulled away from his chest to send him a questioning look.

“Who was that?”

“Nina.” Isaiah’s voice was bland, unimpressed. “Tyee has expressed concern that you’ve been absent.”

A shiver skated through her and her shoulders slumped. “I can’t go back yet.” Vulnerability colored in her eyes when she lifted to his meet his gaze. “Not yet.”

“I would never force you to return before you’re ready.”
