A sense of oneness had taken over her soul. Every pulse of her heart echoed his, her head resting casually atop his defined chest. With every breath, she softly inhaled his wonderful scent.
She washappy. Here. Now. With Kaien.
When was the last time she could truly say she felt content?
Beneath her, Kaien shifted slightly, as if he was afraid he might wake her. In that moment, Blair realized the plaid blanket had been pulled over her sometime during the day, the material draping over their bodies in a cocoon of warmth.
Outside, darkness had started steadily creeping over the sky, the cerulean blue gradually giving way to midnight. She’d slept in his arms all day … and Raeths almost never needed more than four hours of sleep. Her Raeth had stayed still for hours just for her.
A smile tugged at her lips.
When she gently shifted to look him in the eye, she saw that the blood loss that’d so affected him last night was no longer a pressing issue. Rationality highlighted the brown of his gaze.
“How do you like your new title?” Humor played in her voice as she cocked her head to pin him with a hard stare.
His eyebrows knit together, the effect giving him a boyish pout. “My new title?”
“Glorified pillow.”
He barely acknowledged her joke with a weak smile. “I’m sorry about last night. With my abilities tapped out, the only thing I could do for you was offer you blood.”
Blair raised an eyebrow incredulously while the Raeth pinned underneath her offered his sentiments. She was in no mood for banality.
“Shut up, Kaien.”
And then she surprised them both.
Delicately, she brushed her lips over his, savoring the sweetness of his flesh. As a tingling sensation tickled over the sensitive skin of her mouth, he tensed beneath her.
But the Raeth quickly dissolved into passionate play when she continued trailing a line of kisses from his mouth along the hard edge of his jaw.
Kaien’s fingers slid up the long lines of her body, the touch hesitant but entirely too stimulating. Captured between his strong, warm hands, Blair continued to engage his mouth, nipping softly at his lower lip, and earning an enticing growl from the man below her.
In a flash of movement, he’d flipped her underneath his sinewy body, his knees straddling her thighs. With one hand under her back, Kaien lifted her up to meet his ravenous mouth.
Barely caging the predator under her skin, Blair’s fingernails scrapped down the flexing abdominal muscles that sculpted his drool-worthy abdomen with precision. All of a sudden, there was entirely too much between them.
Kaien didn’t react when she literally ripped the shirt off his torso, his lips never leaving hers. Her fingers sunk into the hard muscle of his biceps, one of her legs hooking around his thigh with wanton claim.
Hungry for everything he had to offer, Blair arched into his body before locking her arms around his neck and drawing him close. He indelicately collapsed on top of her while maintaining the feverish union of their mouths. Pinned below him, she revered every inch of his muscular frame.
She was drowning in a sea of sensation, so deep that she’d lost track of the lifeboat above her. Kaien’s hand streamed down her side as if to grab at her shirt, then froze.
And suddenly, she felt bereft. He’d vaulted off of her and was beside where she lay on the couch, his eyes darkened in worry.
“You’re bleeding again!”
Floundering at the bitter feeling of loneliness that choked through her, Blair could only blink at him. His eyes were riveted to where the damp material clung to her wound, his hands already at work unfastening the belt on her waist for better access.
“Take more blood, Blair.” His eyes met hers before she glanced down at the proffered wrist.
“No.”
Kaien recoiled ever so slightly. “You’re hurting!”
“And you can’t afford to lose more blood.” Blair’s tone rose with her temper, but it wasn’t directed at him. She’d been frivolous with her feedings, and he had paid the price. “If I take more from you, you’ll be anemic to the point of unconsciousness.”
Fury flared behind his features. “Better me than you.”
