“No,” he shook his head, “just you.”

She blinked at him, anticipation soaring through their mating bond and wrapping around his soul. “Why, Kaien? Why did you check on me?”

Swallowing the thickness in his throat, he admitted, “Because you’ve always been … special. To me.”

One moment, Blair’s hand was against his sternum, and the next, it was wrapping behind his neck to bring his lips to hers. In the seconds that followed, she’d backed him up, trapping him between her body and the wall behind him.

Stunned, he froze like a deer in the headlights, too shocked by the sudden turn of events to respond immediately. But confusion swiftly receded, his primal instinct taking over. Anger and arousal collided in a tangle of emotions, the growl in his chest warning her of his intent.

His arms cinched around her with crushing ownership, claiming her body as his. When Blair’s lips broke away from his to bite at his shadowed chin, his fingers fisted in her hair and yank her head away. Blair let him, hooded eyes full of fire and lust.

Kaien’s mouth went to her throat, kissing and claiming the sensitive skin as he loosened his grip on her blonde strands. Blair’s fingers captured the back of his head, pulling him even closer as she breathed in his scent.

In the back of his mind, the spark of his Raeth abilities came back online with a startling roar. His mind flooded with the connections to his people, his sovereign. But even as he rejoiced in the sense of rightness it brought, the calm that washed away the insecurity of his own weakness, nothing was as important as the woman in his arms.

Retreating from her neck to claim her mouth once more, Kaien could barely keep the primitive side of his nature contained. Half wild for the beauty in front of him, he stooped down to capture her legs.

Sensing his purpose, she swung herself up and into his hold, tying her legs around his waist as their lips locked once more. Frenzied, neither could get enough, tormented by any inch of their bodies that wasn’t flush against the other. It was as if they were starved for each other, downing in a sea of loneliness only the other could fill.

It was passion, pure and simple.

Heart pounding in his ears, Kaien could barely keep up with his vampire’s demands. His back hit the wall once more as he clutched her tighter against him, yearning for more and deepening the union of their mouths.

He wanted Blair. Every cell of his body quivered for her presence as he held her in his arms, her body twined indecently around his. Nothing he’d ever felt could compare to the passion of the woman that would be his mate.

A pointed cough at the other end of the room had both of them freezing. When Blair reared back from him, his eyes were still locked on hers, dilated from their passionate interlude.

Slowly, they turned their heads in unison to stare at the person who’d invaded their make-out session.

Nina offered them a quizzical smile from where she leaned, arms crossed on her chest, on the other side of the kitchen. “Good to see you two are getting along.”

Chapter Fourteen

Blair’smouthdroppedopen.

With the taste of Nina’s brother still lingering on her lips, there was no denying the palpable attraction that laced the air between her and Kaien. Especially considering that Blair’s legs were still cinched around Kaien’s tapered—and currently shirtless—waist.

For a beat, no one spoke. What could she tell her best friend when she’d literally caught them red handed, their fingers in the cookie jar?

Had Nina known they were together when she teleported here? Or had she simply come to retrieve her brother? A tickle of anxiety iced through Blair’s veins, followed by an involuntary shudder that shattered her outward calm.

Was this a betrayal of trust? Blair had been so overcome with need for Kaien that all doubt had fled her mind where he was concerned. The wildness inside of her had demanded she mark him—claim him as hers—and she’d succumbed.

Worse still was the fact that a sliver of resentment toward her sire had taken root in her gut. Not only had Nina supported a mission that had gone horribly wrong, but she’d continued to place Kaien in a position where he couldn’t excel or live freely.

Now that Blair knew his feelings on the matter, she couldn’t excuse it, especially not when Nina’s had been a purposeful absence lasting nearly a century.

It was a feeling Blair hadn’t had time to contemplate or explore.

All these thoughts swam on the surface of her mind as Blair gaped soundlessly at her best friend, unable to form words on her stricken tongue.

Fortunately, she didn’t have to.

“Enjoying your vacation, Kaien?” Nina asked.

“We—I—Blair and I—this isn’t a vacation,” Kaien sputtered, faltering like a marionette whose strings had been cut.

If Blair hadn’t had been cringing already, she would have then. Nina blandly dismissed her brother’s atypical behavior by shifting her gaze to meet Blair’s, expectant.
