Chapter Thirty

AsBlair’sfledglinghadspoken, his eyes had tinged to icy blue, the viciousness of his statement appealed to her on a baser level. It was all Blair could do not to stand and shout ‘here, here.’

Instead, she supported his claim. “It does seem that Torrin has an infatuation with Lucius. In fact, when Remmus was in Torrin’s electronics, he was able to identify that the leader of theCitizenshas kept watch on our council members for years.”

“When I asked why Torrin targeted you, Lucius,” Kaien interjected, “he said it was because you didn’t hide. That you were an uncomplicated target.”

Blair’s teeth ground together in her mouth, her frothy anger building beneath her skin. But instead of speaking out, she held her tongue as Lucius processed the news.

“We cannot return to our Los Angeles House.” Lucius’ grief painted over his features as the weight of the situation was spoken out loud. “Already our lands are teaming with Feds and humans. It is fortunate that the council was able to remove all traces of our supernatural nature from our territory before the scene was uncovered.”

“Agreed,” Kane concurred. “We cannot afford for immortals to live there under that kind of scrutiny and visibility.”

Isaiah stirred across the room. “The Kitty Hawk location is yours, Lucius.”

Surprise spread across the vampire’s features when he snapped his gaze to Isaiah’s, his mouth gaping open at the offer. “Isaiah?”

“I already have my territory in Utah, Luc.” A dismissive wave of his hand. “Maintaining two is rather tiring and quite honestly, a waste of resources. Our new clansmen have made the move from their previous territory and have left Kitty Hawk uninhabited. While you’ll need to retrofit the buildings to suit your nature, it’s a good starting point.

Isaiah smirked. “Besides, I’d rather it stay in the family.”

Lucius had mated with Isaiah’s adopted daughter, Circe, and had been initiated into Isaiah’s clan by merit of that mating. Previously, the pair had two residences: one in Utah with Isaiah’s clan, and one at Lucius’ former House lands in Los Angeles.

Blair had recognized that Isaiah’s affinity ran deeply toward his adopted daughter, Circe, but she’d had no idea it extended to the vampire Circe had mated as well. For a Raeth sovereign to willingly relinquish territory to another was nearly unheard of.

Lucius swallowed, deep emotion penetrating the mask of anger he’d donned at the onset of the meeting. “You honor me, Isaiah.”

The Raeth scoffed without malice. “Don’t get used to it.”

Chuckling under her breath, Blair squeezed Kaien’s hand, overjoyed that her fledgling had a new place to call home. Moreover, Kitty Hawk was far closer to Solaris than Los Angeles had been, which meant she’d be seeing her fledgling more often.

Except that wasn’t quite right. With her personal Raeth taxicab, distance no longer mattered. She sent a burst of love and adoration through the mating bond to Kaien. Then, she watched intently as Kaien’s face lit up in a genuine smile before turning toward her and nestling her against his shoulder.

I love you, Blair.

Blair gasped inaudibly. Kaien’s telepathic voice echoed in her mind, his psychic presence tangible. Sensing her surprise, he clutched her closer and ran his fingers down her arm.

We have our own bond now, Blair. Can you reply to me?

Focusing on the task that she’d only ever accomplished through her bond with Nina, she pursed her lips. Then, she attempted to push her mental voice into his head loud and clear. Can you hear me now?

His chuckle beside her was the initial response. We’ll have to work on your volume. I think you’ve left me psychically deafened.

As the meeting digressed into logistics and potential defensive scenarios, Blair absently rubbed her thumb over Kaien’s pulse. The Raeth was unequivocally hers, and regardless of the melancholy state of their world, she was blissfully content.

Happy, even.

For Blair, it was a startling realization that made her lips curl. Thinking back to their journey together, Kaien had never wanted an obedient, submissive mate. All he’d wanted was her.Blair.

And all she wanted was him.

Three hours later, the delegation dismissed to an atmosphere that was far more relaxed than it’d originally been. Conversation abounded around them as she and Kaien stood, but Gideon captured his attention near immediately.

“Kaien.” A genuine smile traced the Elemental’s full lips, his electric golden eyes shining with question. “Lucy has informed me that you have gifts similar to my own.”

“Did she?” Blair’s mate smirked in response, a happy grumble emitting from his throat. “From what I’ve seen, we share an affection for the earth.”

Gideon nodded, his dark hair settling over his forehead. “I’d love to see how our abilities compare.”
