“Sorry we’re late!” Raina exclaimed, dropping into a seat next to Jesse. She pulled a corn muffin from her bag, tearing open the plastic and immediately shoving a piece into her mouth.

Anna collapsed into a chair on her other side. “I worked up such a sweat running around the dorm this morning. I’m starving!” As she spoke, she poured herself a cup of ice water from the pitcher on the table and downed it in two gulps. “What’s new?”

Jesse nodded to the other end of the table, where Gracie and Dean were locked into an intense staring contest.

“I like you more,” Gracie argued.

“No,” Dean disagreed. “You’re shorter than me so your love capacity isn’t as large as mine. It’s impossible for you to like me more.”

“That doesn’t make sense, you idiot!” Gracie jabbed Dean’s arm.

“Well you’re short.”

Gracie stared at him. “Fact. What about it?”

“That’s it. That’s the insult.”

“Oh my god, they’re disgustingly adorable,” Anna murmured, standing. “Okay, I need food if I’m going to have to watch that.”

“I’ll come with you.” Jesse palmed his empty plate. “I want to grab some more fruit.”

“Ooh, want to get me pancakes?” Nicole asked from the other side of the table, lazily handing her plate to him.

“Sure,” Jesse said, an amused look on his face. “How do you want them?”

“Drenched in syrup.”

Jesse sighed, shaking his head. “You know I can make the perfect balance of pancake, syrup, whipped cream, and strawberries, right?”

“That’s nice. Drench mine, please.”

Rolling his eyes, Jesse headed off with Anna.

Nicole scowled. “He better bring me my drenched pancakes.”

Raina finished eating her muffin, quickly pullingRomeo and Julietfrom her backpack to read over before class later that day. They’d finished reading the play in class that week, and Mrs. Dixon had a tendency for pop quizzes shortly after finishing a book.

“Hey, are we still meeting for this?” Nicole asked, peering over her shoulder.

“Maybe we can meet once more?” Raina suggested. “There’s still the end of unit essay to do. We can work on it together.”

Nicole looked surprised. “Um, yeah. Sure. That would be...nice.”

“Can you at least try to see this from my perspective?” Gracie exclaimed, drawing both girls’ attention to where she now stood.

Dean stood before crouching down. “Nope, I’m still right.”

Gracie glared at him. “Though she be but little, she is fierce,” the brunette hissed at him, punching his shoulder and storming away.

Dean watched her go. “Did she—” He paused, flexing his shoulder. “Did she just quote Shakespeare, punch me, and flounce away?”

“Sounds about right,” Theo agreed calmly, taking a bite of his toast. “I wouldn’t want to be you right now.”

Dean winced. “It didn’t even hurt,” he remarked. “I guess that’s the plus side of having a small girlfriend.”

Raina raised an eyebrow at him. “Want to repeat that within her hearing range?”

“No thank you.” Dean cleared his throat. “She’s mad enough at me already.”
