Charity grinned with obvious pride. “Thanks. We were going to keep it quiet, but the moment I hit six weeks I started vomiting, and well... it’s been impossible to keep quiet since.”

“I think we should dance,” Anthony said, and his wife beamed up at him.

“Oh, that would be lovely.” She turned to me. “Lovely to see you again, Veronica.”

Anthony lifted his sorcerer’s hand to wriggle his fingers at me. “You sure you don’t want another vision?”

Hell no! The first one had been bad enough.

I backed away so fast Anthony laughed at me and called out, “Bye, dragon daughter.”

I ran away, not afraid to admit that I was nervous about spending any more time with Anthony. My future awaited and it was in the human realm, not here with Iain, or my parents, or anything to do with my dragon shifter genes.

Chapter 1.

CURRENT DAY.

Veronica.

I lifted the screaming, red-faced baby up and out of her crib, bouncing on the spot as I’d been taught to do by one of the children’s other nannies. “It’s okay, sweetheart. Don’t cry. Mommy and Daddy will be home soon.”

The baby immediately calmed as I held her in my arms. I wiped her tears away with a clean face washer before resettling her for the long night ahead. This family loved having kids, but they certainly didn’t hang around long enough to bond with them.

“Good girl,” I cooed at the infant. “Mommy and Daddy have way too much money, don’t they?”

I was one of three nannies the parents had hired to look after their five children. I wouldn’t have stayed working for them as long as I had, except for the fact that they took amazing holidays to exotic destinations.

Luckily for us, the parents couldn’t go anywhere without our help, so they took the nannies with them everywhere they went.

We were currently in Greece, staying on a little island I could walk around in a single day. The weather was spectacular and I had what the humans called, ‘a tan.’ As the daughter of the King of the Winter Palace, I’d never known my skin could be any other color than pure white. Every time I caught sight of myself in a mirror, I wanted to burst out laughing from the shock.

I had two days off every week to travel and sightsee. There weren’t many jobs like this one, and my responsibilities ended and began with keeping the baby happy. Compared to running a kingdom, I counted myself blessed.

A vibrating in my back pocket caught my attention. My cell phone.

Weird. Who would be calling me at this time of night?

I placed the sleeping baby back in her crib then snuck out of the bedroom and raced down to my own tiny sleeping quarters. The text was from my older brother...

“Shit!”

There’s been an accident. Dad’s hurt. You need to come home.

My father was King Damon. The King of the Winter Palace. A formidable and dangerous foe.

My heart pounded sickeningly in my chest as I typed back.

What happened? Is he okay? He’s healing... yeah?

As I hit send, a million thoughts raced through my mind. He couldn’t be really hurt. He just... couldn’t. Dragon shifters healed quickly. Supernaturally.

My brother’s response took so long my fingers were white from gripping the phone by the time the shocking response came through.

No. He’s not okay. He fell. Shards of glass got in his lungs. Marienne’s coming. But you should come home.

A sob rose to my lips as I texted back.

I will. Is everyone else okay?
