I put my hands on my hips and stared down at the mess of summer dresses and bathing suits that I would never wear again. Damn, I was going to miss the sun.

“Well, actually, I might leave it all for you and Tania to share, if you want?”

Narelle stared at me with wide, surprised eyes. “Seriously? You’re not taking any of your clothes?”

I shook my head, feeling stupid for ever thinking I should pack my clothes for the trip. “I’m from a really cold country, I’ll never get to wear any of this again.”

Narelle reached for one of my red sun dresses that she’d openly coveted in the past. “Thanks, Ronnie.”

Now, that was a nickname I was going to miss.

“Oh!” I dove under my bed and pulled out my wallet. “Take the cash I have, too.”

I pulled out the notes and coins I’d collected and tossed them down onto my bed.

“Oh, I can’t do that,” Narelle exclaimed. “Take it with you.”

I sighed as I ran my hands over the top of my head, pulling my hair up and into a ponytail. “No. Please share it with Sarah, if you want. Have a few drinks on me.”

Sarah was the other nanny, but she was older and a little crankier.

Narelle tilted her head. “Thanks, but... why?”

I shrugged. “My parents have money, so it’s just not a thing.” And that was the understatement of the century.

“You never told me that.” She sounded hurt, but I couldn’t stop to explain any more. I had to go.

I grabbed my cell phone from where it had dropped onto the floor and slid it into my pocket. “It’s not important. But I have to go. Would you tell the Fredricksons that I’m sorry?”

She nodded, then reached for a sweater, pulling it on to cover her bare arms as the night air had turned cooler. “How are you getting home? Surely you need money for a plane ticket, or something?”

“My parents will sort all that out,” I explained, grabbing my friend into a hug. “Thank you for everything. It’s been great.”

Narelle chuckled in my ear and hugged me tight. “You’re a weird one, you know that?”

I smiled against her hair, then pulled back to look straight into her bright blue eyes. “Yeah, I know. You take care of yourself, okay? No going back to that asshole of an ex-boyfriend. Got it? I don’t care how cute you think he is.”

Narelle rolled her eyes but grinned at me as well. “Yes, Mom.”

I grabbed her against me for one more hug, her warmth and comfort making tears spring to my eyes. Stop it! It was time to go.

“Bye.” I hurried out the bedroom door before I could change my mind.

The house the family was renting was on the top of a large hill, and the back garden was completely private. No one would be able to see me shift and fly away from there.

I ran out the back door and into the cool night air. I hadn’t shifted in the whole eighteen months I’d been here, and I could feel my dragon waking up inside of me. She was stretching her wings and shaking herself, ready to take flight for the first time in so long. And there was an awakening joy that began to infuse my blood.

I glanced around, taking mental pictures of the exotic trees and the crystal blue pool. I’d enjoyed my life in the human realm. I’d learned a lot and made some great friends. But there was no question about me going home. Not in these circumstances. If Dad was hurt, or God forbid, dying... I had to go home. Now. Mom would need me.

My heart began to pound faster as my shifter rose up and took over my body. My skin changed to scales and I grew taller, bigger, larger.

I blinked and my eyes shifted as I transformed into my dragon, with keen night vision taking over from my human side. Like any other predator.

I tried not to think of Iain as I launched up and into the air, flapping my wings to get higher. I flew toward the portal that marked the crossover point between realms, and even though I tried to keep the thoughts at bay, my dragon cried into the night.

I’m coming. Please. Don’t die before I get there, Dad.
