“Here you go Santa,” the little elf chortled, toddling into the room after us with a tray of milk and cookies.

This was dinner?I glanced up at Nicky and then looked back at the food. Maybe I really was dreaming afterall? Or... had I fallen down my stairs and knocked myself unconscious in my rage? Did it matter at this point?Ultimately, No. May as well just enjoy this madness.

“Thank you, Elsa,” Nicky said.

Then the elf left again.

I picked up a glass of milk at Nicky’s gesture to help myself and took a sip.

“God, that’s good!” I couldn’t help but say as the cold, thick, milk slid down my throat like creamy silk.

Nicky smiled as he grabbed a sugar cookie generously decorated with red and white icing. “That milk has been infused with protein, vitamins, minerals, and just a touch of magic. You could literally live on that and stay healthy forever.”

I gulped down some more, then picked up a cookie. “This too?” I asked.

Santa shrugged. “I like my sweets.”

I laughed; I couldn’t help it. Then I sunk my teeth into the festive deliciousness. It tasted like heaven. It was the perfect blend of all my favorite Christmas spices, coupled with a mouth-watering brown sugar caramel finish. “This is the best Christmas feast, ever.”

Nicky frowned at me as he turned in his leather chair to face me better. “What do you mean? Didn’t you lunch with your family? As I understood, that’s as common a tradition among witches and warlocks as it was humans...”

I waved my hand at him, signifying that it was a ‘no-go’ subject. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Okay,” he said. “But please tell me how you arrived on my doorstep... so to speak.”

I set down my glass of milk with a sigh. “Well, all right. But you’re going to get the whole story.”

“Take your time,” he said, leaning back in his chair and relaxing against the cushion with a smile. “I’ve got at least nine months until my work starts to get busy again.”

Chapter 5.

JAYDY.

Nicky’s smile made me smile, so I took a deep breath and started talking, hoping my courage would show up along the way. “Well, my best-friend Pansy got married a few weeks ago, and her parents gave me your card at her reception. Mary said they’d met you and that you’d welcome some company.”

Nicky’s lips parted on a soft gasp, then he smiled again. “You know Mary and Stephen?” he asked, a sparkle in his gaze.
