Jaydy squeezed her back, though her gaze lifted up to meet mine over Pansy’s shoulder.

There was a question in those eyes, but I didn’t try to decipher it. Not now. I just smiled back. “Good morning, beautiful,” I managed to say.

The girls ended their embrace and walked back over to us.

“Jaydy, I made you a hot chocolate too1” Elsa said, walking around the huge island counter to offer the cheery red mug to Jaydy. My mother’s mug. The Mrs. Claus mug.

“Oh, thank you Elsa,” she said, taking the drink and grinning down at the elf, not understanding the significance of the elf’s gesture. “Though I’m going to get fat if I keep enjoying treats like this.”

Elsa snorted as she walked back to the kitchen. “You’re too thin, anyway.”

Jaydy brought the mug up to her lips and took a big drink, hiding her smile behind the mound of floating marshmallows.

“Well,” Pansy announced, not sitting down again. “Now that I know you’re safe, I’m going to head back to Salem. Maverick’s family has this thing on...” She shook her head.

“New responsibilities, huh?” Jaydy asked, her amazing blue eyes sparkling with amusement.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Pansy said, grabbing her cell phone and a blue gem off the island counter. “Maverick’s waiting for me, so I’ll get moving. See you in the New Year, maybe?”

Jaydy glanced over to me, then back to Pansy. “Oh, I...”

“Oh, I almost forgot! I brought your cell with me. In case you needed it.” Pansy searched through her patchwork bag and pulled out a phone and a long cord. “And the charger of course.”

Jaydy grabbed the phone and held it to her chest. “Oh, thank you.”

Pansy turned towards me. “So nice to meet you, Santa.”

I inclined my head towards her. “And nice to meet you too, Pansy.”

Pansy slung the colorful bag over her shoulder, waved once more to Jaydy, then pressed the blue stone to her heart. Then she was gone—vanished into thin air.

I stared at the space she’d just occupied. “Wow.”

Jaydy sat down on the seat Pansy had vacated. “Yeah, that was pretty cool,” she agreed. Then, she turned towards me with a look of hope plain as day on her lovely face. “So, what are we going to get up to today?”
