Chapter 16.

Nicky.

JAYDY WAS EVEN MOREbeautiful than I remembered her being, though her eyes seemed sad and lacked the sparkle I’d come to expect in her gaze somehow.

“Do you want something to eat or drink?” she asked suddenly, breaking the silence and taking a step towards the kitchen. The layered skirts of her dressswooshedaround her, making her look like some sort of fifties movie icon. “I can make you anything you like... though, now that I think about it, my magic is a bit zapped from dealing with my mother, earlier.”

“What happened?” I asked, closing the space between us so I wasn’t so far away from her.

Jaydy shrugged, her creamy shoulder calling out for my lips. “I just... called her out on her crap, basically. I’m sick of wishing for decent parents. And I can’t believe I’ve spent my life hoping they’d finally start loving me. People don’t change. Not like that. It was irrational of me to ever think they could.”

I reached out for her, wrapping a hand around her waist and drawing her close.

She didn’t fight me or try to walk away, in fact, she melted right into me with a sigh of relief like it was the most natural thing in the world. Like it was where she belonged and where she wanted to be.

“I’m sorry you had to deal with that,” I said, pulling her even closer so that I could hug her tight.

She rested her head on my chest and burrowed in, just snuggling into me like a kitten seeking warmth, security, and love.

We stood like that for so long I almost forgot why we’d fought and ever been apart. But moments later the peace that had fallen over us like a soft blanket of snow was disrupted and we were forced back into reality.

“How was your vacation?” Jaydy asked hesitantly.

I chuckled in response.

She lifted her head to stare up at me. “Why are you laughing?”

“Because it wasn’t exactly a vacation,” I explained ruefully. “I ate a steak, rejected a woman, got a restless night’s sleep alone, then called Mary and Tony.”

Her lips quirked up ever so slightly at the edges. “Rejected a woman, huh?”

I chuckled again at her expression. “How did I know that would be the only part of that sentence that you’d hear.” I sighed. “Full disclosure. The waitress that brought me my steak propositioned me. I made it clear I wasn’t available, and she left in a huff.”

“Really?” Jaydy whispered, her beautiful blue eyes fast glistening with tears.

I dropped a gentle kiss on her sweet rosy lips. “Of course, I did. Even though you haven’t accepted my proposal yet, I told her I was engaged, and as far as I’m concerned. I am. Nothing’s changed. You’re everything I’ve ever wanted, Jaydy. Passionate and crazy, intelligent and beautiful, fiery and feist. Please forgive me for the past and know that I only want you in my future.”

She reached up and cupped my face, her eyes brimming with love. “I’m so sorry I overreacted, Nicky. I just didn’t know how to respond to all that talk about being fated lovers. It was sort of overwhelming. And when you told me about your old lifestyle... I got jealous. I didn’t want to imagine you being with anyone else, even if I wasn’t ready to accept it, yet.”

I smiled at her and kissed her again, this time slowly and with heart behind it. “I grew up with it,” I said gently. “Fate has always been a part of the equation—a part of the magic. I understand that it’s going to take you time to be comfortable with the idea. So, how about we just... be together? I can’t be apart from you now, Jaydy, but there’s no rush to marry or start a family. We’ll figure it outtogether, as we go along. It takes two to tango, as they say.” I smiled, hope exploding within me.

Jaydy sniffled, returning my smile. “I would love that, Nicky.”

“In fact,” I began, stroking my hands down over her fine ass, “I was thinking we might start over with a vacation of our own? I cancelled my usual room in Vancouver and thought maybe you’d want to come back with me... We can stay in one of the funky couples’ suites for two weeks if you want? Perhaps check out the town and see a play? Or maybe you want to go to New York? The possibilities are endless.”

She raised an eyebrow at me. “So, you want to flaunt me around, so everyone knows you’re taken? Is that it?”
