And you broke up with her just like that?"

Kaden raised an eyebrow at my exaggeration. I knew full well that hehadn't just dumpedher and that the lady in question was undoubtedly angry with him for more than one reason.

"We're just not right for each other," he muttered, stroking his dark hair as if it bothered him more than usual. "She has other interests. And I need a woman who doesn't get scared when my fingers close around her throat."

As if to confirm, he reached out. His hand closed around my throat in an affectionate gesture. Heat flooded my cheeks. Not because my best friend demonstrated what he meant, but because I could not imagine finding what he was just doing to me exciting.

I cleared my throat. "Maybe all these women are just afraid you'll suffocate them."

Kaden's hands were huge paws, and when a man of his size towered over you and totally dominated you, most women were bound to be afraid. He couldn't expect every woman out there to have the same twisted fantasies he had.

Inquiringly, he gazed into my face. "You're not afraid."

The statement made me smile. "That's because I know you, you idiot."

He lowered his hand, but seconds later I could still feel the pressure on my skin. As if the touch had been burned into my memory. I blamed the prevailing temperatures on the heat that suddenly pulsed through my body. Even for O'ahu it was hot tonight.

"Maybe you should do things a little differently in the future," I added after a few seconds, during which he'd said nothing and instead continued to look at me intensely. The blush in my cheeks would certainly not fade, so I was grateful for the darkness around us. I prayed the moon was not bright enough to betray me.

"You mean you want me to forget what I prefer and do what a hundred other men have tried and failed to do?"

"How can you be sure they're preferences if you've never had a taste of them?"

"How doyouknow they're notyourpreferences if you've never tried them?"

The counter-question made me grit my teeth. Kaden could have any woman our age– and probably plenty a few years his senior. He was devilishly handsome, and looked a few years older than he was. Sun-kissed skin wasn't the only trait of his ancestry. Dark hair curled around his head, despite its shortness. When he moved, he appeared in complete control of his body– and every muscle that moved under his skin put on an impressive show. Most of the time he seemed like a young demigod, and if that wasn't enough to win someone over, his natural charm would. Kaden was personable and knew how to express himself. And when he smiled, or flashed that mischievous grin that revealed that one dimple on his cheek, most women would have licked his bare chest immediately and declared him their property. At least until they found out that he wasn't satisfied with vanilla sex. So far, his quota had been to make a hundred percent of the women run away screaming. That was if he had not already broken up with them. He had a kind of radar for women who were not in tune with him. Unlike him, though, I didn't have the chance to fuck around wildly and find out exactly what he meant by all of his ominous preferences. I didn't have the time– or the interest– for men who didn't even know the simplest basics.

I leaned back with my hands in the warm sand, a sigh on my lips. I tried to come up with an answer that didn't sound like I was trying to tell him how he should choose his next girlfriend.

"We're eighteen, K. I don't think a lot of people our age get to have breathtakingly good sex that satisfies them to the core," I murmured in the end.

He didn't seem too thrilled with the answer. I could imagine him pulling the corners of his mouth down in that dissatisfied way that immediately told everyone he had a problem with what was happening. The wordpatiencewas foreign to Kaden. If he wanted something, he wanted it immediately. Not in a few years or after an indefinite amount of time.

"What about you? Aren't you afraid of not finding someone who suits you in every way?"

I shrugged before shaking my head, then gazed at the sky and stared at the stars. Everybody dreamed. Pursued goals. Expressed desires. Even if someone claimed to be content with their life as a single person, I believed that, subconsciously, they still felt the need to be close to someone. A need for a life that they didn't have to live on their own. Not because it was a conscious choice. But because there was a deep-seated basic need in all of us that we could hardly escape.

And although I knew this longing, this desire to arrive somewhere and to be at home, I wouldn't say I was afraid that I wouldn't find the right person.

This was nothing more than a romantic notion in our minds that did not exist in the real world.

"Maybe I'll find someone who doesn't suit me at first sight. But the attraction is so strong that we develop into the people we need to be to have a future together."

"Damn it, when did you become so wise, Nik?"

"Maybe in the time you've spent finding women willing to let you choke them."

He let out a sound of indignation. "It doesn't sound as attractive and sexy as it is the way you put it."

"So how would you like me to put it?"

There was a brief pause, he slid his feet through the sand thoughtfully until he had found the perfect answer.
