"For what? The internet doesn't know everything. It can neither tell you what I like nor what you like. Besides, I would take the information with a pinch of salt."

"Like what?"

It didn't take me more than a second to find an example, but I took a moment to think about it. This was not the way I had wanted to introduce Nikau to the concept. But it seemed too late for caution now that she had stuck her nose so deeply into the internet that she had stumbled upon the existence of extreme dynamics.

"On the net you can find countless instructions on how to tie someone up. Not just hands to a bedpost, but more aesthetic. Shibari, if you want to know the technical term. But just because you've read the instructions on the internet doesn't mean you should put it into practice. The anatomy of the human body is unique. Some parts of the body can be very fragile, and there are places that you should never bind. Too much pressure can also cause damage. Or the wrong weight distribution. You can learn a lot of theory on the net, Nika. But it never prepares you for reality."

"Do you know how…"

"No. But an acquaintance is very accomplished," I replied before she could finish her sentence.

And yet none of this would give her any real insight, because bondage techniques like this weren't necessarily about sex– but how was I supposed to explain that to her when there were so many other things she hadn't even begun to understand?

"Your interest is piqued, isn't it?" I asked after a few seconds. I was curious to see if she would deny it or dare to admit that she was, at least in theory, interested in what I had been practicing for years.

Instead of giving me an immediate answer, she spent a few seconds playing with the breakfast on her plate. Only then did she raise her eyes in my direction. "I'm trying to understand and approach this with an open mind. That's all."

Of course. If she were more comfortable with that attitude, I would let her keep the illusion for a while longer. But once you stuck your big toe in those waters, I knew exactly what it did to you. It seemed so innocent and calm, but as soon as you broke the surface, there was a pull you couldn't escape, no matter how hard you tried.

You wandered from one experience to another. You started with the light fare before it lost its appeal and then tried something else, something more exciting. Only to find that you liked it even more. And in the end, you licked the wound you had just inflicted on your best friend's finger, realizing that while playing with blood and pain had its appeal, it might have been a step too far when it came to the sexual component.

"Then it's only fitting that we have dinner tonight," I said.

"I'm still not sure what dinner has to do with anything, but…. all right."

Nikau would make the connection soon enough. That much I was sure of.

* * *

Actually, dinner was just an excuse. A way to take her somewhere she felt comfortable. Somewhere she wouldn't have to worry all the time that something might happen.

I had chosen a restaurant right on the beach, with an excellent selection of local dishes, and I had arranged for the table to be a bit away from the others so we would have a good view of the sea and the sunset. However, we were not unduly disturbed by any of the other people present.

There was nothing that should have surprised me that night– until Nikau looked at me intently before raising an eyebrow. "I'm not sure I've ever seen you in a suit before, K."

She hadn't. That was something that had come about after the resort opened, because most investors simply took you more seriously if you looked and acted the part.

"And that's why you can't take me seriously now, or why are you grinning so stupidly?"

She shrugged nonchalantly. "Seems to be just the right packaging for what's underneath," she said, surprising me.

Since when did Nikau have an interest in what was underneath my clothes?

"That's an odd way to put it, but I'll take the compliment anyway," I murmured. I also took it upon myself to have a closer look at her dress.

Whether it was a summer dress, a short black one or something more festive, she had always looked good in dresses that clung tightly to her body and she knew it.

My attention made her nervous, as I could feel her foot bobbing up and down under the table.

"Excited?" I asked, amused.

She narrowed her eyes, preparing to protest, until I reached under the table for her leg, closed my hand around her calf and ran my thumb over the soft, warm skin. In a split second, the movement stopped. Instead, she seemed frozen.

"Don't worry, I won't embarrass you in the middle of the restaurant," I said, watching closely as her eyes fell on the table– as if my hand underneath it was enough to embarrass her.

"We've done this many times, Nika– eaten together. There's no need to get nervous."

"But it's different now," she sighed, almost breathlessly.
