She opened her mouth. "Because he's an idiot who doesn't deserve my attention."

The laughter that rose in my throat was impossible to suppress. "Is he?"

"Yeah. He's quite an idiot. And so terrible with women."

I looked at her intently. "Really? What's the problem?"

"He obviously doesn't know how relationships work, that they're not just about sex and kinks. Maybe getting to know the person before throwing other components in the ring would serve him better."

"Pretty presumptuous, isn't it? Maybe with just one look at these women, you can decide whether they are suitable partners or not."

"Oh yeah, and how am I supposed to imagine that?"

I shrugged. "Maybe they turn up and keep talking about theHonolulu Sun. Or ask indiscreet questions about how much you earn. Or maybe they don't have a clue what BDSM is, but they'll do anything without a second thought as to what's behind it and what it entails."

"It sounds as if these women are very simple minded." A deep furrow had formed between Nikau's eyebrows. It could only mean that she was seriously worried about what was going on with these people.

"Indeed. So maybe you should be a little more forgiving of the fact that this guy is so quick to be sure of what he can take and can't take."

"Or maybe he's just really picky," she added.

"And that's a bad thing? To want to keep up a certain standard? Not taking anyone who crosses your path? In my opinion, it's a very wise thing to do. And to my knowledge there are other people who do it that way too."

With a thoughtful sound, she turned to her drink. "What other questions do you want to ask?"

"Would you say that you are more of a submissive or a Dominant?"

Her gaze met mine. Insistently. "I think there's only one correct answer to that. You should be aware of that by now."

"Do you have any ambitions for a taste of the other side as well?"

She pressed her lips together before deciding to answer my question. "Yes. But only for a very specific purpose."

I decided not to probe any further. "And would you go to the press at any point in time to air your dirty laundry?"

"No. But I would tell them who you really are."

And there it was. The first crack in the facade of our shared roleplaying.

"And who am l?"

"I've read all the articles. Every single one of them I could find, Kaden. And the things they write about you couldn't be further from the truth. It kind of makes me sad that they say all these things about you and there isn't anyone to stand up and tell the truth."

"I don't care what the press say. As long as the people around me know it's all a lie."

"You don't think it affects everything you do? These women read who you say you are online. They try to appeal to that side of you. If you ask me, that's called manipulation."

"And it would also happen when I get to know the women for the first time and then ask them what they have in mind in terms of sex."

The bartender gave me a look I couldn't interpret. Maybe it was one of the stranger things he'd overheard. Who could say for sure?

"Don't take this the wrong way, but I want to feel like when I'm with you I don't want to have to worry about making a mistake. I want to be with someone who is like my best friend. Someone I can laugh with, but also feel comfortable talking to. I want the kind of sex that is hard and I'm the one dominating. But I also want the kind of sex where I'm half asleep in the morning…" I stopped myself and shook my head. Nancy had been the best example– none of that was possible with her. She spent hours in the bathroom in the mornings, long before I even woke up. When I told her to do something, she would only do it because she was thinking of my money, which might reward her later in the day if she got it right. She hadn't paid any attention to my talks about the problems at the resort, and her interest in doing anything else had been low.

Accordingly, the time she'd managed to survive with me was also very short. Every woman I had dated in recent years lost out to Nika when I compared all this and drew the immediate parallels. Nika came out on top easily.

"Do you realize that guy over there keeps staring at you?" I asked abruptly, looking over my shoulder.

She raised an eyebrow. "Is that really important now?"
