I can’t even concentrate on the training. It’s not just the fact that I admitted I loved her so casually. It's also the fact that in that very moment all these tumultuous feelings finally aligned themselves.

I have to find a way to maintain control in the royal guard. I’m the captain for a damned reason, and no one should question my authority.

However I may feel about Krista, I also need to ensure the stability of the palace. Our land will come crumbling down if its shields are in unrest. I’d like to avoid dragging the imperial family into this petty fight. Selliss is the main cause of it all.

“Captain Lasta,” a soldier approaches me suddenly.

“What is it, Asdra?”

“Selliss wanted me to let you know he’d be missing out on training today. He needs things to take care of that he didn’t elaborate with me,” he explains.

“That’s fine, I’ll find him later. Return to your position and tell the rest of the men to get ready for sparring practice.”

He salutes me. “Yes, Captain!”

He runs off towards the training guards. I wonder what ‘personal matters’ Selliss has to take care of.

He can be organizing a rebellion.

I shake away those thoughts, deciding they are far too exaggerated. Perhaps he wouldn’t go to the extent of a rebellion, and even if he did, it’s not something that could be whipped up in the time he spent away from one training session.

But he could try planning to challenge my position as captain.

The situation has become urgent already. There’s no time for me to waste. I’m losing Krista, if I haven’t already, not to mention that I’m most likely confusing her with words that don’t match my actions.

I can’t give up on her. I love her.

I pace around the dirt, pretending to watch over my soldiers. But really, I’m thinking of ways to get around Selliss. It’s also my damn fault for letting him act too casually with me. I shouldn't have praised him evenonceabout his skills. It got to his hollow head.

“Heilso,” I call one of my closest subordinates.

“Yes, sir?”

“Take over for me. I forgot to take care of some things within the palace,” I lie while walking away.

He takes over the post without hesitation. At least I know that I still have their obedience before Selliss can get in their heads. I need to leave so I can think of something without many distractions. But with so much movement happening all around, I go back and forth between war prevention and trying to figure out how I can keep Krista in my life.

I don’t head a particular direction, but the thought of seeing Krista goes through my mind. I force myself to not even thinkabout it. I can't distract her, either, until I can confidently bring her good news.

I can’t do this alone. I need support if worse comes to worst.

Like a gift from Mynir, I suddenly remember the Prince and his advisor’s human mates. It’s obvious the disarray my head is in that it took me this long to think of it. Quickly, I make my way towards Slyth’s office.

Before I knock on the door, I can hear him answer me from the other side.

“Come in, Lasta,” he says in a rather bored tone.

I open the door, wondering how he knew it was me, to find Slyth sitting at his desk looking over a pile of paperwork.

“Are you busy right now?” I ask, eyeing the uncharacteristic mess he’s made. I can tell he’s stressed about the political tension. “I can come back later, but I really need to talk to you.”

He sighs and puts down the document. “No, it’s fine. I’ve been looking for an excuse to finally take a break.”

Even the rattle on his tail looks absolutely frail. He works himself to exhaustion even if the Prince pleads with him not to.

“Does Lorelai not get upset when you work this much?”

He shrugs. “She does, but I get rewarded after finishing all my hard work,” he says with a mischievous smile.
